Can atlatls throw stones?
Feb 12th, 2020 at 3:57pm

I think I remember seeing a documentary about ancient Egypt years ago and in one scene some boys placed a stone at the end of a stick and threw it at some birds.
Could this be correct? Can atlatls be used in this way?

a staff sling without a cord between the stick and pouch. Split the thicker end of a 4-5 foot stick and put a pouch between the fork you just made by splitting the thicker end. might work better (accuracy wise) than a staff sling  Wink

I still haven't been able to get a good release from my staff sling (though it's been a while since I took it out). I can imagine this would be easier either as Joerg does it or with a cup.

That is actually a nice conceptualization of what I am thinking. A stick with a bowel.

Has it ever been made though?
Haven't been able to find anything like it. And I mean both if it has ever been used by some ancient peoples, or even just as a modern day idea.

Not likes this though. I mean a stick with a little bowel, almost like a spoon.
This concept sounds interesting though. Has it ever been utilized outside of sport?

Not like this either. I am thinking something in the vein of a sling, where every kind of projectile can be picked up and thrown.

I can’t say I know of anything specific but it’s surely been done and would definitely work.

hadn't thought of the tennis ball throers as 'atlatl's.
But I guess they sort of are Smiley

I've thrown stones with one. Not easy and does take a lot of practice with timing, but works !

Like a staff sling, how and when you accelerate the thrower determines when the missile releases.

Thing is with dream's acceleration - it's just safer to stick with tennis balls.
You never know, one day he might accidentally run in the right direction !

Would be fairly easy to make one with automatically adjustable jaws - set to open via an elastic band.

But I have way too many projects already, so you'll have to make it yourselves whistle

Considering all these nice replies I guess that I should go ahead and make one. I am thinking a Y-stick with an extra piece of wood, so it forms a triangle. At least for a starter.

I am sure, Atlatl is first thrown stones. Then only the spears.

Try adjusting the length of your release cord.  It changes the angle your pouch hangs at consequently changing your release point.  Don't give up. Staff slings are great.
