Uses for sling(ing) in a survival situation
Feb 7th, 2020 at 6:47am

The sling hunting thread has me thinking what else a sling would likely be useful for if we lived in nature.
I think it would have often been used to hit things out of reach like a bird's nest or even something you want to stay away from like a hornet's nest or beehive.
Herding of course, and keeping birds off the crops.
What else?

Having extra cord that can then have a secondary use is always a good idea. Helps to save space and weight whilst moving about so you could use a sling as a strap or to tie something off.

Shooting at flocks of sitting waterfowl.  I wouldn't want to use an arrow in that situation because if you miss with your arrow, which you invested time and effort in making,  it will most likely be impossible to retrieve.
Other good targets would be squirrels' nests and primates up in trees.
A sling is very easy to make in almost any situation and in many cases good ammo is lying at your feet.  IMO it would be insane to not have a sling as a secondary weapon in a survival situation.

Signaling, if you are considering a whip crack suitable Wink
Scaring prey possibly as well.

Not really survival, but I used a sling once for work. That was during a geological survey in the high alps. In early spring if I remember correctly. Some markers were needed in the middle of a rock face as reference points. The reference points had to be placed about 30 m or so above ground in the rock face.
The rock face was instable. Climbing it was completely out of the question. Approach from above as well as below was also quite dangerous because of avalanche danger and rock fall. We ended up blowing out some eggs and filled them with paint. Then I launched a couple into the rock face. That worked quite well.

Holding my coffee while while I’m driving  around in an old armored personnel carrier. The thing has no cup holders and staying caffeinated is definitely a matter of survival!

Once you're finished finding water, food, building a shelter, and starting a fire, you could use sling making to keep your mind occupied until you get rescued. Cheesy

Kombinieren Sie einen Bogen 🏹 mit einer Sling und sie haben ein Pellet bow. Ich war sehr überrascht über die Funktionalität

Around mid September through October, the pitch in pinyon cones dries enough to allow the seeds to be released when hit by a rock or tball. We have come out of the woods with four shopping bags of seeds harvested in one day. That is a lot of slinging for an old guy!

Pellet bows seem cool but god I’d be scared of shooting my own hand.

i was thinking you could use it to throw a projectile into the air to attract attention of a plane/boat if you were stranded? as in if you were able to make some sort of flair/smoke grenade out of supplies

I've seen a crossbow version which I would be much happier using. At least then you have a lump of wood between the pellet and your fingers Cheesy

Nope. Sorry. I don’t have any photos of the whole vehicle to share publicly. All I will say is that it’s so old that the military doesn’t want or need it anymore, so they let us researchers turn them into robots... and it’s a lot of fun to drive!
