Tin Can Stove
Nov 5th, 2019 at 11:52am

I've been wanting to test out "primitive" fire lighting techniques but one thing that's slowed me down is that I haven't had anywhere to put the fire once it's lit. So I put together this tin can stove made from a pineapple tin at the base and a sriracha green pea tin (which are delicious by the way). Only took a bit of drilling and filing and it works great! Still needs a few more burn-ins to take off the paint but it really does work fantastic. I have a few ideas for making a wood gas stove but for now this will do. I won't be making any roast dinners on it, but I'm hoping to get a cup of tea out of it eventually, maybe a sausage Cheesy

very neat - so what firestarting methods have you tried ?

If you go back through the archives there's a couple of fairly comprehensive threads on fire pistons. I never did make one, but some definitely did.

Fire pistons really interest me but so far I've tried bow drill and flint and steel. Bow drill has been complicated by having crap materials for the string of the bow (slippy paracord and jute that broke despite twisting it into two-ply). Flint and steel is difficult without charcloth but I should now be able to make some. I have a ferrocium rod but haven't had much practice with that. I had a go at a fire roll but it wasn't with the best materials. Got close to an ember. Basically I need a lot more practice with all of them Cheesy

Good job, Kick. In the army we were issued little stoves that looked just like that.  Sterno (jellied alcohol)  was their fuel.

I've used one of the trangia stoves back in High School when I did the Duke of Edinburgh award and they work really well at heating food but, at least we found, it also means your food tastes like methyl alcohol which DID NOT help the flavour of our cheap noodles. Wood I think will be more palatable Cheesy I am already working on an improved version that will also burn the gas released from burning the wood. Need to see if I can pull it off though.

When you're eating K and C rations or drinking army coffee methyl alcohol can improve the flavor.

Just made a new stove and it's amazing! It works incredibly well. I still haven't been able to find a cheap aluminium cup or something similar for heating water in, but as soon as I do, I think it should be efficient enough to at least make a cup of tea Cheesy Video shall be coming soon.

As soon as I have some marshmallows Cheesy I really want to make a cup of tea on it though. I could lie and say it's because boiling water is incredibly important from a survival aspect and ensuring it can at least do that makes for a good test, but it's really because I'm English Cheesy

Keep forgetting to get marshmallows, but I picked up a milk jug to be my kettle and got a cup of tea! A cup of tea that tasted terrible but a cup of tea none the less!
