Has anyone tried something comparable to clout archery with slings?

Sounds fun to me Smiley

I haven't done that specifically, but I have done something similar.  A little while back I was meeting a friend to play a round of disc golf.  I was ready to go early so I took a sling and a bucket of balls with me.  The first hole of the course is just a really long field, so I would sling a ball out as far as I could and then try to hit that same spot with the next one.  I only went through my bucket (12 balls) 3 or 4 times before my friend got there, but it was a lot of fun.

Never got within 18 inches though.  A couple feet was probably my closest.  Smiley

Hmmm... 180 yds with scores based on accuracy?  6-dozen shots per round? Might be fun, but it would be difficult to find 72 stones buried in the dirt that far away, and you might have trouble scoring  bouncing shots  too.

Would work with tennis balls. Easier to shoot than stones.

biggest problem is that almost all good sling missile roll and bounce - arrows don't.

You'd need to use something like a beanbag that won't bounce or roll much.

Or incorporate the bounce and roll. I've been thinking of suggesting a bounce shot for the online challenge (and not just because I keep accidentally getting bounce shots whilst practising so should be easy for me...) and maybe a similar thing would work for this. I have tried a few times to get a shot to end up where I want it, not just hit where I want to hit and it does add to the challenge.

You could probably use lead. They don't bounce so much as drill into the ground... or so I have heard.

But then you would need a metal detector to find them.

I think spending any amount of time searching for ammo will kill the enjoyment of this especially if you're having to bust out a metal detector.

a slightly loosely packed beanbag will usually not roll much. The vikings use a similiar thing for training and as part of their sling examination process.

You have to land it as close to the target as you can.

For practice you could try chalk rocks  on a deserted section of road would work, rake a section of beach and use golf balls or even the sand bunkers on a golf course.

Bean bags or not too tightly packed rusty balls.

If a the clout flag was placed in a sandpit the bounce impact of ammo would show in the sand.

what's flat far away from humans with low vegetation and clear view ?
a desert, abandoned airport or highway, a huge parking lot for a ski resort (in the summer) , the sea (during cold months)

or against a cliff side you can't overthrow and have a clear view of.

a golf course maybe?

a private desert with hard ground is the winner
the sea has a lot of cons, not easy to put a target on and can't walk the distance and (for me) the perception of distance is highly distorted
