There is nothing wrong with learning a trade.  When I went to high school if you had a high IQ you took College Prep. and if you didn't you went to Vocational School.  Many of the kids who took College Prep. never went to college.  Consequently they were completely unprepared to earn a living.  Some started college but for whatever reason, financial, academic, or whatever they were unable to finish.  They had to take low paying, unskilled jobs.  Many people who graduate college never get to work in their field of study.  They also have to work at low paying, unskilled jobs.  The kids who went to Vocational School were able to start a career and make good money upon graduation.
Don't get me wrong. A college education can be a wonderful thing. It can open many doors.  But learning a trade certainly isn't below anyone's level.  Pick a trade that's in high demand and excel at it.

This is what I've liked about nursing. In a lot of ways it's a trade with a lot of practical training in wards focusing on different areas of healthcare and, at the end of it, you get a qualification for a job that is always in demand and, even if you decide you don't want to be a nurse, always looks good for jobs working with people. Pay is one thing, but, if you specialise enough, you can certainly bump that pay up. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, you have to have the right personality for it, but you can do far worse.

The thing that appeals to me the most about nursing is, as you said, it's always in demand.  That's a big deal. You'll always have a job.
