Atlatl point?
Feb 6th, 2019 at 9:48pm

I found what I believe to be an atlatl head in the surf on a North Carolina beach. I could find only one other example of an arrowhead being found in the ocean on the east coast. Was wondering if anyone could provide some expertise. Atlatl, spear, or arrow head?

Nice! It looks way to large to be an arrow point. I would say atlatl or spear.

Agreed. It's much too big to be an arrowhead.

If you were a little further south, I would say that was a Morrow Mountain type blade.  That's probably a knife blade, it looks a little large to be a dart point.

The stone appears to be rhyolite, which is from the western part of NC.  From the chips, it appears to be really dark green?  Almost black?

If that is MM related, it will be around 6 to 9 thousand years old.  It's an early to mid  Archaic point, right after all the mega fauna had died off due to the planet heating up and the glaciers melting.

Thanks for the information. I think it’s black. It could easily be from father south and have been carried up by the Gulf Stream.
