That looks like a sickle sword, or more correctly a sickle knife.  For harvesting wheat.  And other grains for threshing.

Oddly enough, the Japanese, when they defeated and occupied Okinawa, forbid the carrying of weapons to the people.  So, the Okinawans just learned how to turn farm tools into weapons.
