counting countries.
I know many americans believe that sailing past the 12 mile territorial limit means you fall off the edge of the world, and that it's perfectly fine to call something a 'world' event even if no one but americans take part - but it's not so Smiley

As long as you send the correct address to the person who ends up sending you your sling - you're good Thumbs Up

To continue the jest.....   Wink

More accurately, the only legitimate reason we have to sail past the territorial limit is to enjoy gambling on a cruise ship.  Otherwise, venture too far from our lee shores and you face being eaten by horrible monsters or worse.

The territorial limit by the way, is 12 nautical miles, which is 13.8 good old American miles (real miles) and 22.2 km.  And while we are on the subject, why is it that when you Brits want to seem all sophisticated and Euro-like, use the metric system, and when you want to brag, you use standard.  To wit: I have never heard a Brit refer to Roger Bannister as breaking the 4 minute 1.60934 km.  On the other hand - when one walks from Piccadilly Circus to Covent Garden, it is "almost 2 km."

nobody uses kms in england.

I - personally - grew up in germany so used the metric system for 14 years or so.
these days I use them all.

So milimetres, inches, feet and meters. always miles, never kilometres.

All uk car speedos are still in mph. And for some bizarre reason I'll never understand - we sell petrol in litres but quote car efficiency in miles per gallon.

It's a mixed up, shook up world Smiley

I switch around between Imperial and metric too. The shop is around 4 miles away but inches are almost meaningless for me.

I think that we can resolve the metric vs. Imperial issue by agreeing to use Edward I's system of measurement.  So that everyone knows, my ideal sling length is 91 and 1/2 barleycorns, "no more and no less."
