We were invaded by thousands of black beetles this year. Here is a pic of one and its track.

How big are they, and where is the general location where you live?

We get pretty similiar beetles over here in Finland (well at least round here in Helsinki). They seem to pop up for a week or so then disappear.

They are about an inch and a half long.  I am in central AZ.

My best guess is they are a species of Rhinoceros Beetle, likely in Tribe Pentodontini or possibly Tribe Dynastini. Hope this helps you.

They look like dung beetles to me. Happened to see a wet beetle cross a dry spot. The trail it left on the concrete surprised me. Would never have guessed beetle track if I had not seen it happen, so I took a pic to share this incredible knowledge with my slinging brothers and sisters  Grin

The profile just doesn’t seem quite right for a dung beetle 🤔. However, the track is definitely interesting. Thank you for sharing!

Would you happen to have any more pictures of this insect, perhaps in higher resolution? This ID is really bugging me.

We have them in Jersey. They come in black or red. We always called them Dirt Beetles.

Oh! Now that is a dead giveaway. It is a dung beetle, then. It still is odd that the head appears so small, since most species I have seen have a wider, shovel-like head, but rolling a ball of organic matter is definitely indicative of a dung beetle. No question.

Baby food 😁.

Dung beetles collect dung and roll it into a ball, then lay their eggs inside. Their larvea hatch out as little grubs and feed on the dung until they are big enough to pupate and become new dung beetles. They are extremely important for breaking down animal waste so it does not just pile up.
