I tried an experiment today...
Sep 28th, 2018 at 1:25am

I have this perfect little round, gray river rock I found on the ground in Michigan. I’ve been carrying it in my pocket with a sling wrapped around it and using it for sling photos as a reference rock for months. The shape and size are good, but the gray was a bit boring and there were a few discolorations... until now Grin

After a little vegetable oil and an hour in a toaster oven, boring gray rock has become shiny black seasoned non-stick “tactical rock”...

That looks really cool. I've never heard of that technique but I feel it would be useful in prop making (just gonna bookmark this thread...).

I actually cooked this rock several times.  I started at 200F for 30 mins. It got slightly darker but still had a lot of uncooked oil on it. I ramped it up slowly and kept trying. What worked best was 450F for an hour. I stopped there, but higher temps or longer times might be even better, or it might take a few extra cycles of oil-and-bake at 450 to get a good thick coat of polymerized oil if you start where I stopped.

FYI, the coating is really tough!  I hit a piece of osb and the rock bounced across a concrete floor with barely a scuff on it. I can’t say the same for the target Cheesy
This is the back side of the OSB panel:

... and here’s the rock after two times skipping across concrete. Another trip to the oven will fix those little scuff marks.

Second try... 5  different rocks this time.
4 coats of oil. Each baked for 45 mins at 450F.
The last coat still had a bit of oily residue on some rocks which implies that the pores are all filled. I’ll try one more bake at 450 for an hour, but here are photos in order:
Oiled but uncooked
After the first cook (most oil soaked in and disappeared)
Then photos after rounds 2, 3 and 4

So... my next experiment failed miserably  Shocked
I made some air-dry glandes with a clay roller, then I let them dry for 3 days and tried to cook them the same way I cooked the rocks... after about 10 minutes, the glandes exploded like popcorn in the toaster oven!  Obviously they weren’t dry enough to oil bake them yet.
