How much time do you spend making a sling?
Jul 8th, 2018 at 12:46pm

I have put as much as 6 or 8 hours into a single sling, and judging by some of the photos on the forum, that may be significantly less than some of the ones other people have done. I don’t think any of my slings have less than an hour of my life invested.

How much time do you spend when making a sling?

Well when making the braided slings with just a boring three strand braid, I can probably get one finished in about 45 mins or so. If it's a herringbone braid it takes a little longer but not too much longer. Most of my slings are pretty simple so I don't spend days on them Cheesy

That really depends.
Giveaways are like  ~20 - 30 min, braided ones ~ 2-6 hours.
Complex pieces can take multiple days, but I usually make them in many 1 - 2 hour chunks. For one I once wrote down the time, and that one amounted to ~40 working hours. For most slings I don't know how much time I invested, and honestly, I don't want to know.

I think averaging 20-30 hours on some but possibly more due to the fact that it's so easy to sit down for what you think will just be a small thing and have it end up taking 3-4 hours.

My tactical slings which are meant to be used rough with no thought to looks are more like a few hours from scratch. But they last a long time so good return on the effort.

I usually braid just a couple three hours a day. Slings made with commercial string take three to four days. Braiding with fiber takes a day or two longer.

For a 27" woven split pouch with sisal, it always takes about 3-4 hours, I can't seem to speed it up much. I tried bundling the strings together so they don't get twisted while braiding, but that only shaved off maybe 15-30 minutes. Braiding and weaving just take a long time.

I have never spent more than like half and hour, maybe 45 minutes on a sling. Made all mine from paracord and never had a problem with it, not particularly aesthetic but it works

A couple of pieces of para cord with a leather "H" style pouch takes about 5-10 minutes.

Braiding a good one can take a couple of hours.

Trying to make your first Andean-style sling from Roderick Owen's book.

*First attempt*
"God damn it Yarn, stop going everywhere!"

*Second attempt*
"What, why did you do this, I just had a perfect fist-sized amount of chevrons and now you decide to move on me!"

*Twenty minutes later*
"No, stop tangling!"

*Two hours later*
"Stop tangling you bastards!"

*Two minutes later*
"What, But I just fixed you, you bastard!"

And many, many more tangle-fixings later, I finally made it.

Subsequently, It only took me about... maybe 20 or more hours to get one done...

I don't even know how I do it, but somehow I get the occasional stuff-up in my braids... but usually it actually looks decorative, so I'm still happy with my novice-level work.  Wink

I just finished my wife’s “Fiesta” sling, which is a 3-color, 6-strand bamboo braid with leather sewn over the “ladder” pouch. I probably have about 8-10 hours invested in it, but it’s spread out over a week, so it’s hard to gauge.

Depends very much on the type of sling.

Fastest is paracord leather pouch I'd say, but I do get very fussy about the exact shape and the knots so it takes me much longer than is actually necessary to put a functional one of these out. Realistically I'd take something like 10 mins to 1 hour for one.

At fastest its simple cut out a simple leather shape, punch holes, thread paracord, tie knots, melt fuzz, done.

Recently I made a full balearic sling from deconstructed sisal cord. That took a very long time. Probably around 20-30 hours, spread over a few weeks or so. I'll be a lot faster next time I do it though. Most regular braided slings I make fall somewhere in between, probably 3-8 hours, and add an hour or two if weaving is required.

I used to braid jute (e.g. 6 strands for finger loop, then doubled to get 12 strands) + weave the pouch (2,3,4,6, 8, 12 strands and back). That could take me 3 hours and didn't look great. Nowadays I just loop a piece of laundry line to produce 2 cords and a 3-strand pouch.

varies.
The waterproof 3d printed tennis ball slings (like i was using about an hour ago at the lake with the dogs) 10 minutes plus the pouch printing. Got the printing down to about 40 minutes I think.

The leather cap paul style. Half an hour, probably.

Over the years I've pared down and streamlined the design to the point where the slings are optimal and the manufacture is as simple and quick as I can make it.

I think next year I'll get guelu to show me how he makes his braided slings with the woven pouches.

Best braided sling design I've yet seen or used.
