Sling Cracking
Jun 19th, 2018 at 12:38pm

NooneOfConsequence recently posted a recording of a sling cracking like a whip and I thought I would share my newly repaired sling which really has a great snap to it.

(The post about the sling repair and pictures of the sling can be found here:

http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1527709097 )

So who else has a good whip sling? Cheesy

Ah but I have a much better way of disgusting my identity. I sometimes wear different clothes to the ones I wore in the video and I don't always wear the same hat! I'm a matter of disguise!

My absolute best cracker that I ever made was a nylon balearic style sling, about 24'' with a very strong taper to a pretty thin end. That thing was so loud, even with 50% effort and no stone in the pouch it was a beast. The end has somewhat worn now though (even with nylon!) and it's not as loud.

A few of my sisal balearics can be pretty loud too, I find the key is having a nice thin end (with some fluff), even paracord can crack if you leave the end fluffy- so having a strong taper is secondary imo, but still helps with the noise a lot.

Any sling that tapers like a whip should be a pretty decent popper. The audio I posted was from a 4-strand cotton round braid with a large release knot and almost no fluff on the end. I guess the cm of loose cotton is enough, but I would like to make one that is designed to properly crack eventually.

@KTO I suspected you might be a practitioner of the disguised arts. I don’t normally give up all my secrets, but since we’re all friends here on the Internet, I will share my best disguise trick: changing socks.  For example, in my lion hunting video, you may not have noticed that in some of the slow-mo shots, it was actually me prancing majestically in front of the camera, not my dog  Grin

I find that pj's and TS3's generally crack pretty easily.  Jute slings crack loudly. Sisal too.

KTO, first off that hat is genuine addbassery sir. With that whip cracking sling and hat you are two steps closer than anyone else I've seen to Indiana Jones status. Which is a good look if you like women in the 30+ age range.

I don't use cracking slings, actually I do the opposite with tabs so as to create the least amount of noise possible. Although I admit the whip crack is a lot of fun to do.

I'm with morph, my main goal is effective hunting of small game so having a loud crack goes against what I'm trying to do. Fun for the kids but

Timpa: That's a damn good whip crack Cheesy Also you've reminded me that I need to get on with making my own Cestrosphendone.

Morphy: Why thank you Cheesy It's by far the best hat I've ever owned and definitely the coolest.

Morphy and Mersa: When actually slinging there isn't much of a crack at all and I guess if there was it would show the power wasn't going into the stone but into the sling which would be no good. It only cracks when "dry-fired" so it's best of both worlds Cheesy
