Help with a mask?
May 22nd, 2018 at 4:14pm

So recently I’ve stumbled upon a true gem of YouTube channel that posts amazing short horror films weekly, and in one of my favorite series on there the main characters wear this mask. It seems like it should be easy to make and I want to make one, but I’m not quite sure how. They sold masks a few Halloweens ago but that was a limited time thing and I didn’t know about this channel then sadly. So, do any of y’all have an idea how a mask like this could be made? What materials would be needed, etc?

https://mobile.twitter.com/crypttv/status/917177588572815360 (The video shows the mask well)

By the way, if you’re in need of a little horror, check out that channel, I assure you you won’t be disappointed!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papier-mâché is what your looking for.

Model over a ballon, custom form or similar.
See:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCiYNE_hmNg

and many others examples Wink

For the eyes: thin gauze.
Then any kind of paint e.g. spray paint.

Ah I see, thanks. So it’s a paper mache base coved with gauze? Makes sense. How do you think the slit that sort of looks like a mouth is done?

Mark off the areas you want raised and use the paper maiche to build it up.Then shape the gauze over it.

yep I would go with paper mache as well.
Easy to make and use - kinda messy, wear gloves Smiley

We always used to make it from wall paper paste and newspaper when we were kids.

Alrighty, when I get around to doing this I’ll be sure to post a pic of the finished product. Though, one more thing that seems hard to me is sight, how would one see through gauze painted black, and not have their eyes seen through it?

I've used the hood of a black morph suit, worn under a mask for this effect. Pretty cheap off the internet and works pretty well. It's not like looking through sunglasses but you still have pretty good vision.

if you use something like net curtain with a fairly coarse grid. distance will make the difference and the direction of light.

So net curtain painted black, will be pretty clear close up but appear solid black from a distance.

Don't get too fine mesh though or the paint will just block up the holes.

A lot of craft stores like JoAnns have full face plastic masks. This could be used as a base to build up on. I covered one with thin buckskin for a haunted house I worked at. When I was done, it looked pretty creepy.

That's exactly how I made the mask in the photo. It was super cheap off ebay (search "white mask" and you'll find it) then attached a piece of reindeer antler and coloured the mask grey using a pencil with clear nail polish to seal it.
