Update on my move/ log cabin build.
May 10th, 2018 at 8:17am

I just spent a week in northern maine,  looking at land for sale. I wasn't going back to NJ, without buying any land.  So I ended up buying 20 acres.  Mostly wooded, has a 4 acre area cleared out for a home site. The guy I am buying from owns 200 acres on the same street,  and the neighbor owns  500 acres,  which I have permission to hunt/ trap/ and harvest logs to build my log cabin with.  I won't moving till the end of the month, and the build will take a while before I start.  But I will definitely try to remember to update here.

Thanks,  I am super excited.  We got a 30 foot camper and a 15x18 foot canvas tent to work with. Haha. The town population is 202.

Sounds ideal Vetryan! Can't wait to see your progress. I've always dreamed of building my own log cabin.

Thanks Morphy,  I always had the same dream. And in that town. NO building codes. So I don't have to worry about dealing with inspection and get to do what I want. One if tge first things is get a well drilled, and solar power to stsrt off to get some kind of cell phone signal booster up abd running. I only can get bars for calls and texts,  no 4g at all. So I can update as I go.

that sounds awesome.

Do you have any guides or plans you're following?

I have my own cabin design I drew out myself.  Possibly going dto do a 2 story build.  But I have been researching on cabin building forums, I do have a few books that I can recommend that I own and we're recommended to me. For a beginner at least, which that is my skil level.

Oh I know. Lol. Been mine for a long time, that's why I had to share the news. I will be building with trees. Looking at spruce,  or cedar.  Scribed logs. I look forward to your advice,  if you could post here, would be great. I think a lot of other members will enjoy the information as well.

I'm all yours , just make sure you ask the question before you perform the task . Unlike engineering tasks trees don't recover from the wrong planning very well. Basically what I'm saying is if there are any trees that your concerned about but want to retain make sure you plan before you build. Not after

Gotcha,  I understand.  Now what should I be on the look out when I do start? I have done my research,  and mostly would like to use dead standing trees if I can. But  I need a better look at the trees once I get back up there.  The cabin is gonna be simple.  Once I down the trees,  let dry for a bit. But also had been researching on using green trees ( not letting em dry) as I have seen people going that route abd being successful with it, and then later on compensate the drying later on with chinking material. Then using a scribe for the logs, to fit almost like old school lincoln logs.
