how the moon got it's face; the story of stories.
Apr 1st, 2018 at 8:29pm

this was told me when i was a child....i am finally putting it down in print before i die(im not old yet but getting there).  i am trying to accurately remember it but i cannot on so much, so some artistic license is eventually going to be taken.  the way i do these projects is, i write a base or foundation like this first, which is just a story line and the idea of where it is to go, then write in layer after layer, with dialogue between characters coming in like the third or fourth layer.  so with each passing layer it is built up and made longer.  it is more fun with a team...but whatever.  everything said in the foundation below is from memory not imagination of mine, that will come in layers.  do not worry i am not planning on writing out all the future added layers to it, just wanted to share some of the part of the story that was passed to me..Sadplease excuse typo's; have not edited yet.)...

it was said that before the deluge covered the face of the earth, in the age when men's days of life were centuries long, that dragons and giants all were forced to share the planet together with the "foreigners" that were ran out of their original stations in the universe but who taught man how to work with and bend metal for construction and war in exchange for slaves and servitude.

most all of those creatures were in some way at enmity with one another.  men vs. giants, dragons vs foreigners.   none but the dragons could withstand the foreigners  and all sides paid heavily for their disagreements.
the bitterness between the giants and men was so extreme no human was safe, for while the men had the numbers, the giants were still many, and a thousand men armed with sword. spear and shield could not defeat one giant.  all the giants had to do was lift large stones and hurl them at the men when they were far away, and then use their own large weapons on what was left, and the battle was soon decided.  arrows could not get close enough and when they were, could not seen to go more than skin deep into the giants flesh...so the things taught to man by the foreigners to help mankind in his struggle with the giants were really profitless and only put men in a worse spot of having to give their sons and daughters to the foreigners and got nothing in exchange that helped them.

the dragons, who were having their own failures in diplomacy with the foreigners, were indifferent to both parties but after observing the lopsided warfare and seeing how oppressive the giants were, they decided it would be more entertaining for them to watch if they helped humanity to be better suited to oppose their adversaries.

after watching several battles to determine what man was most in need of, it was quick for all of them to agree that man lost most battles before they started because of the giants ability to throw stones from long distances with great aim.  so they reasoned if man could somehow match this same feat, they would have a fighting chance.  one of them, and old dragon, remembered a great war god he had met while exploring  the cosmos in his younger aions, who could hurl rocks with extreme speed, power and accuracy by using what appeared to be nothing more than a string in his finger.

all the dragons thought this was an excellent idea and in their extreme intelligence, that was far above that of any material creature, quickly duplicated what the old dragon told them and learned to master the thing so they could teach men to do so as well.  but the old dragon objected, he said before they could rightfully give the thing to man, he'd have to seek permission from the great war god whom he had met that used it.  they needed to be sure not to bring any curse onto mankind from said deity for copying him without permission.   but the problem was, only he had met the war god and he felt he was too old to make the journey.  so a couple younger dragons volunteered to go in his stead if the old one would teach them the way.  the old dragon agreed but with the directive they are to report every word back that the war god says, omitting none, adding none.  the agreement was made and the secrets shared and it was made known about where the war god's planet was and to look for the one that had as much water on it as earth does.

it did not take the dragons long to find the planet and locate the war god.  after a brief explanation he agreed to allow them to teach man kind how to use the thing and told them it is called a sling.  he showed them much more with it and about it than they could have ever learned on their own or even thought of trying.  the war god's only requirements were after it's introduction to the human mind, men must learn to use it on their own through practice and they are to never use it against him or his planet...and when the human race learned to master it and the sling war started, he was to be informed beforehand so he could watch.  the agreement was struck and all was well.  and even more so, a binding friendship was formed between the dragons and the great war god.  he should them his planet and all his treasure, the most valuable to him were some flowers that were growing by the sea.

once they returned to earth, the dragons explained all that was told them by the war god, and together the dragons eagerly set out so show man the weapon and put him on the path to liberation. they guessed it would take each man some decades to get full use out of.

so they gave the idea of it to all the leaders of every tribe of man, giving nothing more than thoughts of all one could do with it and it quickly spread and soon every one was making the device and practicing.  as the dragons predicted, it took thirty years for people to fully master the use of it and it was a long thirty years because in that time the giants grew more numerous and more violent.  but every man and every woman learned how to sling.  all of them together mastered the thing, with some being more disciplined in it then others.  so all their great minds decided it would be a good idea to get together to decide a battle plan, lay out a chain of command and maintain a large logistical route to supply the army of mankind.  they knew this was going to be humanities one greatest shot.  never before had the human race been so equipped.  they could stand now and fight the giant at ranges further than many of the monsters could throw with their gigantic arms.

so the ancients among men met, many of whom were the best slingers of their peoples.   for it is so that age has to be far along before it interferes with the power and accuracy of a master slinger.    as long as man who has achieved mastery can keep himself flexible, he can keep himself employed.

at the meeting it was determined that cunning showed little separation in the wisest of them so it was agreed that the strongest and most accurate with a sling and his tribes would lead the battle.  it did not take long before they realized how difficult a thing that would be to determine.  for in speed none of their stones could be seen once released and in accuracy, both target and projectile were destroy with each throw.  when they lined up in the desert to throw for distance it was pointless because they cast their stones so far, no one could ever track them out.  so they decided they needed a target that could withstand their hits, while demonstrating who had the most powerful throw that was far enough to count off till the time of impact to determine speed.  therefore the smooth face of the full moon seemed to one and all to be the single best target...and the next one was three weeks nigh.

well during all this scheming, training, competing and plotting, time passed and some among the giants had for whatever purposed, perhaps mutation and adaptation, started  to change and become somewhat reasonable, even it was was still a sort of selfish, self recognition reasoning. one of the strongest and a leader in the wakening of the giants new found awareness was one who understood and from a distance observed what is was the hiding men had been doing.  well the giants caught wind of the plan devised by the humans, because all sides had spies and paid informants, thus all sides had sell outs and traitors... and the giants who knew what man was now able to do were a little shaken for the first time in their known existence.  so the one who was their strong man and leader in the exploration of conscience was picked to go to the leaders and try to devise a sort of false treaty before the war carried both sides into destruction, hoping to get a closer look at the device and perhaps copy it's use for themselves...to regain their advantage.
the giant waited until the leaders of men were gathered to compete for leadership of the armies of humanity and he slowly walked within ear shot and howled out to them that he came with peaceful intentions.  the men were very skeptical but knew they were armed with their slings so felt no intimidation.  they cautiously beckoned the giant into their company and at once wished for him to declare his business.  he informed the group that the giants knew of the plan they had hatched to start waging war against them.  he also told them he knew about the thing they now had that allowed them to throw rocks like the giants can.  he said he wanted to work out a peace, to keep both humans and giants from destroying everything in their war with each other.

the wise men not eager to have to lead many to death, hesitantly discussed all the options.  continued....
