Ice Age boulder in Finland: "Devil's sling stone" (Pirunlinkokivi)

Old legend tells a story about pagan giant who tried to destroy local church in Hattula, Finland, by slinging a stone towards the building. The attempt failed and the stone landed to field it lays today. Old woman and a cow were below the stone, but the church remained intact.

That boulder looks massive- the giants’ sling must have been huge! I wonder what it was made of?

There are a lot of large boulders left over from the retreat of glaciers throughout Finland ("erratics" I believe they're called). You'll be walking through a forest and suddenly come across a massive boulder just sat there. They are quite mysterious and it's my understanding that a lot of them were thought of as sacred and there are many stories and legends about them. Lots of archaeological finds that would suggest offerings found around them as well. There are also lots of balancing stones where they got dropped off on top of each other. The largest one is particularly amazing:

That boulder is shaped very asymmetrically.  No wonder the giant missed.  He should use more consistent ammo.

bear in mind only half the stone sticks out of the ground. If the other half is symmetrical - it's a good slingstone shape. Thumbs Up

Just so, if there is a similar shape under the ground Smiley

But before I saw this picture, I guess the stone was shaped like an egg. Those who have named stone, have never used a sling.
