Nålbinding Tonttulakki
Feb 16th, 2018 at 8:07am

I finished up my tonttulakki (Finnish elf hat) and boy is it warm. As soon as I saw the red wool I knew what I wanted to make and it came out great. I've really fallen in love with nålbinding and I have so more ideas for things to make. I'm currently working on a sling pouch so hopefully I'll get that done sometime soon.

I have to say, nålbinding is really easy especially with the help of Youtube. I've now made two hats and most of a bag and I only started near the end of last year. All you need is wool and a wooden needle. I have plenty spare if anyone wants one Cheesy

It's in the works. I've attempted it with one type of stitch but it's a really hard stitch to do and it got messy so I'm going to have a go with some other ones and see how I do. I think it is possible so watch this space.

Beautiful work. It would be cool to see both a sling and ammo bag done that way.

Thanks! I was making a "snood" (it's just a tube of material used as a scarf, no idea why it's called a snood...) but the stich I used ended up being very thick and fairly stiff so not so good to wear around your neck so I think I'm going to make it longer, sew the bottom and add handles. It should work pretty well as a fairly large bag. I was using Dalby stitch to try and make a sling pouch but that stitch... no. Far too fiddly and slow. I'm using quite thin wool so that's made it difficult so I'm going to try out some other stitches. I also want to get back to weaving a sling and use the wool for that. I think it could turn out pretty good.

Experiments to come!

It is. It's not all that thick but it holds a lot of air in the stitches. Air being the best insulator, it really works well.
