With apologies for messing this up-- here's a baroque painting with David and the sling, realistically shown (netted pouch and thick retention cord and thin release cord)

I have a photo but can't resize it.

Actually look at it again.
The retention cord - with the finger loop is the thin cord and the release cord - with the fluffy end, is the thick one.
Very interesting that he used a netted pouch sling.
He use the same sling in the second picture too.

You may very well be right here but I don't think it's a finger loop on the thin strand. It's either the pinch-knot on a release cord, or serves as a retention toggle (which goes in your direction: the pinch-knot should not have that long a "tail" after it).
Why would the release cord be so thick ?

Maybe to make sure the pouch opens quickly? Or uniformly?

That's certainly a different take on how we do it today.
Looks like he's wearing the finger loop on the pinky finger in the first picture.
Now if only we knew whether the model for this painting was an actual slinger.

If it's a fingerloop on the pinky, does the cord sort of fall down, then up again ? I thought it was a pinch knot on the release. But looking again, it does seem to be the knotted loop on the retention cord. The thing's in New York and I may be able to visit the museum and have a look.
The thickish fluffy end also seems to have a knot in it.

Just a guess on my part Thearos, but it does seem that way to me. I used to wrap my sling in a couple loose loops very much as in the picture as I would walk the fields and forests years ago. It always felt very natural.

Could be that Cagnacci didn't know what he was showing. But the sling with one very thick and one thin cord and a netted pouch looks plausible enough.
