Found a book on slinging
Jan 2nd, 2018 at 12:25am

I was doing some research on some sling ammunition and came across this book, The Sling: For Sport and Survival, by Cliff Savage. It seems like an interesting read, it includes illustrations and takes a look at a few different techniques. There are lots of good reviews, but it is sadly a bit out of my price range at $3,327.18 USD, and that's used. I know, a little high for a paperback. Here's the link to the Amazon page if you doubt me:
https://www.amazon.com/Sling-Sport-Survival-Cliff-Savage/dp/158160565X/ref=pd_sb...

Luckily it seems like the book can be found for free online at http://www.survivalschool.us/wp-content/uploads/The-Sling-For-Sport-and-Survival...
It looks like good material for beginners to look into and includes plenty of interesting historical accounts.

Hopefully bought for cheaper than $3,000 eh? Can I ask you where you found it? I would like a copy myself.

I had a quick scan, fairly interesting read however it certainly exaggerates the accuracy that can be achieved.

-2 days practice and you can hit a tree stump @25 yards

-one week and you can hit a motionless bird @50 yards

I've been going a year and not really at his two day standard yet  Grin

Tree stump at 25 yards? Not too difficult. You're just not choosing the right tree.  Wink

Wow, that price went up... I think it was around $15 or less when I got it. Wonder why the price did that. But I found 2 others for ya: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01FKUL8VO/ref=mp_s_a_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1514921506... and this one, the picture shows a book that is colored differently, not sure if its a mistake or if its actually different https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1893626172/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1514921506&...

Dang - $3,327 for Cliff Savage's dated and somewhat inaccurate book?  Maybe my Christmas wish came true. Time fo us to pitch in and publish The Slinger's Guide.

The book looks great. But the big odd is the chapter about ammo. It is really short net mentioning the techniques of making it (especially glandes). And rifle spin is missing. I have to agree that the writer really exaggerates the precission. In my case it took at least 1 month to reach 150m and barely hit a small cottage. And a bird at 50m?  Grin  In my case a wet dream. But yes, there certainly are people in slinging like Mozart was in playing piano.

the only useful thing i read in that book was when he said it is hard to imagine someone taking lessons in the use of a sling.  that is true but only because there are few people on earth today who could teach anything about it.  much of the book is false.  for example, no, one cannot master a sling faster than a bow.  not even close.  it takes way less than four hundred practice hours to master a bow with both left and right handed shooting.  that is a fraction (less than a fourth)of the time it takes to master a sling with both hands.
