Mushroom Hunting 2018
Jan 1st, 2018 at 2:10pm

I had not planned on starting this thread so early but fate had other plans. I was walking around a park with my wife this morning and as we were heading back to the car she pointed out a tree across the way that had been blessed by the Mushroom Gods.

...

As we got closer it was apparent that she had found a patch of Winter White Gold. The caps are tan/brown and the thick meaty flesh is firm and white, great for frying.

...

...

Of course I picked one to take home and fry up. These taste better than the King Oysters we used to buy at the farmers market back in California. A little butter and garlic and you're in for a treat!

I'm in Western Australia . Currently in the Margaret River region. A few hours south of Perth. Situated between some ancient forests and the Indian Ocean.

I really need to find someone around me that knows enough about mushrooms to teach me.

I'm with you Bill. I've taught myself a lot of skills with books and internet. Mushroom hunting though? That's one I really want some in person teaching.

First find of 2018!!
Pretty happy I found this , we had some summer rain and I went looking for the only thing that fruits in summer in my feild guide. Only a few meters off the track near the river I found a beauty. Pretty sure my ID is on point too.

It's currently -8C (closer to -10C or -11C at least with the wind chill) so we won't be seeing any mushrooms for quite a while.

Nice one. We will probably get some interesting Australian mushrooms now that you are posting pics as well. Suffice to say Ive never seen that species before.  Did you smell it? I've never seen a mushroom that smells like curry before. Anise, seafood, apricots among others, but no curry.

Mushroom was very fresh and I didn't want to break it (thought I'd leave it for others to possibly ponder) and I only smelled it off the ground, i couldn't smell it.
Apparently the smell is stronger as it drys. I'll go back later and see if it's stinky.

I'm really looking forward the the wetter months.

So I had a nice find in a tree I climbed yesterday.
A reasonable sized bracket fungi.
I am pretty sure it is a Ganoderma spp.
Maybe Ganoderma applanatum or Ganoderma australe
I say this because my field guide has both mentioned as growning on similar trees in south west Australia.
May have medicinal properties.

I also returned to smell the curry punk. Not super pungent yet. I'll check again later when it's really dry.

After a little more time and a little more research I think I was wrong I now think it's this.

That's a nice sized fungus right there. You may have heard of this but some type of bracket fungi can be used as a very effective tinder. Here's a link if you're interested.

Thanks morphy!! I'm gonna try this and see if it's similar on this species. If this works my tinder box will be happy all year with a piece like that.
