Figure 8 it out
Dec 2nd, 2017 at 6:02pm

Recently I have been practicing figure 8.
I usually throw multiple different styles of Byzantine. Overhand, overhead(heli),sidearm and a half 8. These styles all have a hanging start rather than a throw or drop.these styles are very adaptable to body position, terrain, arm position, body movement (running stepping crouching), power input and stone weight. But these variables make some inconsistencies. I don't use any "wind up" techniques , I feel on my length sling I don't gain much or any power and reduce my accuracy substantially.

So here is the thing I'm loving about figure 8.
The consistent vertical line that almost all sling stones follow.
Yesterday with very odd shaped rocks I was able to get quite straight flight. It might just be that the hand orientation and sling path are more aligned in figure 8. I think this allows a very clean release. Less rollout so to speak. Also that the stone is dropped into the throw I think has some advantages in accuracy as your body can start from a familiar point. So as throws build up so does the muscle memory.
I think figure 8 is a strong style of throw too lots of power is easily generated. Although I feel It needs a more precise body position and doesn't allow for as much whole body movement (running stepping crouching).

I really want to do some more practice with fig 8. I struggle a bit keeping it straight I think because I do put my body through the throw but I'm not so good at keeping my arm straight (in line I mean rather than straight arm) so that throws off the throw. I've also found it quite long range which has limited how much I can practice it in the small areas I have.

I always found the fig 8 style the easiest to throw compared to the overhand style. I dont know why but overhand feels kinda weird to me. Plus I agree with the power aspect. You can generate a gairly moderate amount of force with little efforts

Definitely a really good throw. No idea why some people have a low opinion of it. I like a good side-arm throw as well but for pinpoint accuracy at longer range, if I had to choose one, it's fig-8.

Figure 8 is neither my most accurate or most powerful style I throw but it's quickly becoming a contender. I think it's the most efficient style ( power input to output). Going to continue incorporating it into my practice throws. At long distances figure 8 and my overhand(fake 8) Byzantine style are similar.
For me Byzantine has a better up and down aim and figure 8 a better left to right.
Hard talking about aiming when we really just throw

Grin

I find it very good for sideways alignment, needs some attention for hight of shot (lest I plough)-- and, increasingly, it hurts my old joints.

What would be best for moving and flying targets?

Whatever jaegoor does ha ha . His videos are some of the best I've seen and I believe he is the current world champion (please correct me if I'm wrong). I can see that figure 8 would be problematic with gas moving horizontal targets , heli seems more adaptable.

Fig 8 is probably my ideal combo of accuracy and power (just not at the same time...)

If I go easy to control the height it's really accurate, I can hit trees at a decent distance very reliably (Ok- I don't do this anymore after reading that convo from before...) Problem is when I put some power on it, it's always off at like 45 degrees into the sky. It seems to naturally release at that trajectory. Firing it at a flat trajectory at full power feels very difficult.

It messes them up, can cause deformities or something. I can't remember the details.

I just had a little rant about specifically targeting trees.
I'm an arborist so I have a different viewpoint than most.
