Recently I have been practicing figure 8. I usually throw multiple different styles of Byzantine. Overhand, overhead(heli),sidearm and a half 8. These styles all have a hanging start rather than a throw or drop.these styles are very adaptable to body position, terrain, arm position, body movement (running stepping crouching), power input and stone weight. But these variables make some inconsistencies. I don't use any "wind up" techniques , I feel on my length sling I don't gain much or any power and reduce my accuracy substantially.
So here is the thing I'm loving about figure 8. The consistent vertical line that almost all sling stones follow. Yesterday with very odd shaped rocks I was able to get quite straight flight. It might just be that the hand orientation and sling path are more aligned in figure 8. I think this allows a very clean release. Less rollout so to speak. Also that the stone is dropped into the throw I think has some advantages in accuracy as your body can start from a familiar point. So as throws build up so does the muscle memory. I think figure 8 is a strong style of throw too lots of power is easily generated. Although I feel It needs a more precise body position and doesn't allow for as much whole body movement (running stepping crouching).
