Sitting and slinging
Nov 23rd, 2017 at 6:45pm

Yesterday I was practicing and had a few throws from the crosslegged position. Most styles are harder while sitting but I found that a helicopter Byzantine works very well form a sitting position.
Has anyone tried this.
Slinging could be a good bit of fun for those stuck in a wheelchair or with movement disabilities.

Drive-By Slinging?

I have tried from a sitting position but it is tough to get any power.. may be that I'm just not coordinated enough.

Defiantly a drop in power but I found helicopter Byzantine style was still getting decent power and accuracy.
Drive by slinging might need a convertible .
I can see horseback working.

Underhand/overhand might work if you were aiming in front or behind but I see your point. I only really like underhand and Byzantine style. I am working on Balearic but that's certainly out of the question for drive-by slinging. Stools and benches work better for me when sitting while slinging.

I seem to remember that in ancient naval warfare, because the oared ships are so narrow, javelineers were trained to cast while sitting down so as not to upset the balance. Would this not be true of naval slingers, too ?

I see no reason why not.
If throwing a heli style side arm release you should still have enough movement in your hips and back to make a decent throw.
Figure 8 would be fine with a short sling and no back rest.
Some other overhand styles would work too.
But I feel the heli style caters for the largest sling.

given that naval slingers would almost certainly have used staff slings, absolutely no reason they couldn't have done it sitting down.

But the point about wheel chair users is an excellent one !

Assuming the polyprop target works, it's ideal for indoor as well as outdoor.

Gonna need some way of pickig the sockballs/tennis ball s up - but yep, that would work.

I've not tried sitting done but have done some slinging kneeling down. It works although it feels a little strange at first. Sitting while slinging could definitely be useful for hunting.

C_A  One of the things park attendants use for picking up trash would work nicely for someone in a wheelchair.  One end has something that looks like a bicycle handbrake on one end, the other has the "fingers that open and then spring shut.

they're okay but get in the way in the chair.

I've actually got some extending grabbers I can print that would be ideal.
They collapse nice and compact when not in use.

Talking about drive by slinging, I once tried slinging from a bicycle. On the first attempt the release cord got stuck in the gears and the handlebars and nearly flipped my bicycle. The gears tore up my sling and derailed the chain.

I'm thinking of naval slinging during the "Classical" period of Greek history, with battles betwen oared-ships: these have archers, slingers, javelineers and boarding as well as ramming, but no engines or towers. At this period there's no staff slinging attested, and I do wonder whether it's possible to staff sling sitting down. I think not.

Slinging using Helicopter style while sitting sounds easy.  I'll have to try it.  As for slinging from any sort of moving vehicle or on horseback, I have enough problems being accurate while still.
