Hello, is there anybody out there? Just nod if you can hear me..

Hey all..  I'd been interested in learning a primitive weapon for a while (other than a bow).  I'd been really interested in making/learning an atlatl... Then, I ran across something surfing the web talking about how great slings were, and how underrated they were..  After running acrosss this forum and diving in headfirst, I've made a couple slings now, one purely from 550 cord, the other from some nylon strapping and 550 cord.  The first with just paracord, the pouch was kind of small and I had trouble with anything golf ball size or bigger slipping out.  I had about a 30% success rate slinging it I think.. but was getting better with more practice, and when it worked, I thought it was amazing.  I then made the 2nd one last night with the 2 pieces of scrap crossed over which should allow me to sling bigger things better.  I tested it out in my garage with an oversized tennis ball (for dog fetching) and it seemed to do the trick, so I'm anxious to try it out for real.
Anyway, this seems like a great hobby (that isn't too expensive like most of my others), and very useful if the world goes to hell in a handbasket before long (which doesn't seem too unlikely)..

Welcome to the forum. The sling is a great tool. It will always be a challenge which keeps us from getting comfortably numb. Its a good compliment to the bow as well since you can keep it in your pocket or quiver so you always have it with you.

Cost (or lack of it) often comes up as an attractive aspect when it comes to slinging. Certainly was one for me.

Welcome from Alabama.

If you have the ability and feel like it, post pictures of your slinging sites and adventures.  This is an international site, it's fun seeing everyone else's adventures.

I like your handle Mr. Morphy!   Morphy was always my favorite chess player!  I compare him to Tesla in the engineering realm.  He changed the world, and is rarely given the credit he deserves!

Quote:
Returning to the United States in triumph, Morphy toured the major cities playing chess on his way back to New Orleans. By 1859, on returning to New Orleans, Morphy declared he was retiring from chess to begin his law career. However, Morphy was never able to establish a successful law practice and ultimately lived a life of idleness, living off his family's fortune. Despite appeals from his chess admirers, Morphy never returned to the game, and died in 1884 from a stroke at the age of 47.

He certainly changed the world of Chess.  It always fascinates me when a prodigy comes along who is so much better than everyone else that its like an adult teaching children. And yes, Tesla certainly fits that description as well. Great to have you aboard. Pink Floyd's one of my favorite bands of all time by the way, great thread title.  Cheesy

As Mr. Morphy already said, Morphy changed the world of chess (as opposed to the actual world that Tesla changed).
So far, I've made my slings (three now in the last two weeks) from either paracord (1) or paracord with nylon strap for the puches (2).  Leather seems like it would work really well, but since I'm vegan, I won't be using that.  Maybe one of these days I'll get hold of some mushroom leather or other synthetic leather to try..  My kid is supposed to be bringing me some seatbelt strap to give that a shot.. Cheesy

Yeah, Floyd is probably my 2nd fave classic rock band.. Grateful Dead being my first...   Yes, I'd classify myself as a deadhead, although not one of the superhardcore, I never actually traveled to follow them.  Double digits on # of shows though Cheesy

Ah the way you phrased it you had morphy changing the world of engineering along with nikolai tesla.

have to admit chess is my least favourite board game. I like an element of randomness in a game.
Now if they introduced dice so you could only move the piece the dice indicated - that would make it a little more interesting Smiley

Seatbelt slings are long established, should be plenty info on how to make them around the forum.

Double denim works extremely well as a leather substitute.

take old pair of jeans. Cut legs into flat panels.
Turn one panel 90 degress and using a fair bit of pva glue, glue the two panels together, weigh down and leave 24 hours.
Viola double denim. All the leather pouch templates work pretty well with it.

Thanks for the advice!
Regarding gaming... Have you played Magic: The Gathering? it's a very good mix of strategy mixed with randomness..  The only real drawback is the cards can get pretty expensive (especially if buying new).  But... Here's a good free and open source game that's basically a computerized take-off of it.  I just tried it out yesterday, played great, really fun.. https://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/argentum-age-is-an-open-source-collectibl...

So (if i get the attachments correct), here is a  picture of the sling I've been using for walnuts and hacky sacks.  I know it's not great, but hey, I'm a beginner.  I've got better in the works..  Also pictured is the  practice sling I made for indoor use for practicing form on rainy days without breaking things...  Cheesy
