Yup. I've had to have surgery on my neck. I had 3 collapsing discs and a lot of bone overgrowth. I was actually losing the use of my arms because of it.
They cleaned out all the excess bone, and replaced the discs. The estimate is that I'll have 90-95% motion when this is all over, Meanwhile, no slinging.
For those of you who are curious, I have a scar that would make a pirate proud.

Remember that old slingers motto (that I just made up), Winter and recovery time is just an excuse to make more slings.
