Fantasy: Giants and Slings

I have thought about this for a while. Big creatures carrying massive slings. I watched video of Shadiversity confirming that I'm not the only one who thinks this.

Could you imagine a giant picking up a boulder, putting it in his sling? Then doing a run up Balearic technique? What that could do to a castle, not to mention the ear splitting whip crack?! If you had giant slingers, or even giant staff slingers throwing humongous pots of Greek fire?! There goes that castle idea.

imagine ?

lobohunter pretty much matches the description Smiley

He's pretty much the reason that the sasquatch myth has resurfaced in recent years. Sightings of our own blacksmith walking the mountain trails of north america. Wink

luis pons is no midget either Smiley

But yep - most fantasy authors have missed a trick that's for sure.

If balrogs had slings, would middle earth have gone dark ?
Probably.

Trolls with slings - oh bugger !

And even a troll could operate a staff sling.

Yeah, of course I'm talking about the creatures that are 3m tall and over. Ha ha, the MOVIE Balrog (I believe Tolkien meant the Balrogs to be only 7 feet) with a sling would be terrifying.

I was just thinking that there should be more fantasy creatures generally with slings which suddenly made me think of centaurs with slings which THEN got me thinking that I can't recall ever hearing about slings being used on horseback. Surely that's been used in the past. I mean horse archers are almost as old as riding horses, someone must have gone slinging on one.

Bolos were used from horseback so I cant see why a sling wouldnt be. I imagine aiming might be difficult but if its a volley throw, that probably wouldnt be such an issue.

@TheMontananSlinger, I love the idea of a giant slinging. It depends on how big the giant is but if it is slinging legit boulders I think the castle is done for. Actually come to think of it, that must be how squirrels feel when we are slinging in the woods.

@Morphy Yeah I remember back when I wanted to make a fantasy story with troll slingers being one of the many warriors that you would see. Funny point about the squirrels, I wonder what the sawyer beetles are thinking after a rock nails one of their buddies!  Grin

@kicktheotter I could be wrong about the points I try to make, but I believe that a sling, especially a long sling would be very difficult on horseback. Not only would the balance be a bit off trying to stand from the stirrup, as I believe good balance helps to increase accuracy and power. But the horse would also not really like its head being snapped by a whip of a sling after experiencing a low sling. A Bolo is fine because you can throw the entire thing at your target, not having to worry about dazing your horse as well as you probably won't need to generate a lot of force in order for the device to then wrap around the target. However Centuars could be great slingers as they'd be pretty good at the run-up.

Well if it was a short sling from fairly close with either helicopter or Apache style it might work. Horses have been trained to ignore worse things than a swat around the ears as well so a proper battle-trained horse would probably not even notice.

Yeah underarm or Apache sound like really good techniques on horseback.

Does anyone know of any historical cases of mounted slingers? Someone, somewhere must of tried it.

Depends, are we talking men riding horses or horses riding men?

@Morphy only in Soviet Russia, you'd find a horse riding a man.  Cheesy

True. I will grant you that point. But I still don't think they compare to the newest Texas Rangers.
