leather sling properties?
Jun 20th, 2017 at 11:54am

the question is: how much stretchy are leather slings?

first record holder used 73,6cm(29") "rawhide lacings" sling, 200gram (7oz) stone.
if such sling is stretchy then we should rethink about the effect it has on long range throws.

from personal experience - not noticeably stretchy at all.
I've got a couple all leather slings.
Never noticed any real stretchiness

But it is interesting that the article is from salt lake city.
Larry bray is from the area.

Do mormons make the best slingers ?

That article is from 1972. And I thought slinging was a lonely sport in modern day. Imagine slinging 50 years ago.

As for the question, to me wool is stretchy, never seen a problem with leather lacing.

early record throws are a mystery to me.
how powerful those guys should be to throw 200g rocks 300+m with relatively short slings!

i'm trying to investigate every little detail i can think of.

The article has come up several times before.

I don't believe the stretchiness of leather would have a large effect on distance. However it is one of the traditional materials for slingmaking, and personally I feel a slight stretchiness is no bad thing. One can argue that such things could have a noticeable effect on the exact way in which the pouch releases the shot, changing the amount of spin compared with launch velocity.

yes i know, this is the second time i talk about it, and many have talked about it before me.

it's funny how an old newspaper article gives us more information about these world records than  guinness world records.

Different Leathers behave differently. Thick belt leather won't really stretch but if you made one out of thin apparel leather I imagine it would stretch

well unless guinness were there to ratify the record. We only have word of mouth.
Given these are americans who insists on measuring everything in feet (they do have yards in america, just don't use them) . Maybe just a measurement system mix up whistle

@Curious Aardvark

i'm talking about the "known" guinness world records held by
Vernon Morton , Melvin Gaylor , Larry Bray , David Engvall which were ratified by guinness.

they are kept alive by sites like slinging.org, this http://paperlined.org/dev/oss/high_energy_slings/ and word of mouth
when we should be able to see them here http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/  Angry

I have braided slings from leather lace and unlike those with cords made from single pieces of leather they are very stretchy. Such slings were experimental. I rarely use them.

I've noticed the leather I use for tennis ball slings stretches quite a bit in one direction, but not as much in the direction perpendicular to the first.

I have to take this into account because if I make my sling going the wrong way, the ball could potentially slip out.  The thicker the leather, the less of a stretch.

Not sure about the correct terminology when it comes to leather, but it's not hard or stiff, just the softer stuff. Elk and moose, mostly.
