Board/card game recommendations?
Jun 17th, 2017 at 5:53pm

I've been looking for some new board/card type games to play when friends come to hang out. Any suggestions? (Omitting the classics like chess and checkers and such of course)

Sushi Go Party is a short and fun game to play with a nice variety of rules and ways to play. Also, Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne are fun.

For card games I like hearts. Turbo Hearts is great if you can get people that know hearts well enough to play it.  Euchre as well.  Settlers of Catan is decent. My favorite board game ever is called Star Wars Epic Duels. Havent played it in years but it was alot of fun. Good luck getting one though. They are a collectors item now. I used to really enjoy chess but havent played it for awhile. Risk is another good one if you have enough competetive people. There are many out there. These days I prefer video games though so dont remember alot of them.

I'm currently playing mice and mystics, a cooperative adventure board game.
For many others that i like I actually don't know the english translation.
One is "Eile mit Weile" (Parcheesi?) and "Brändi Dog" (a variant with cards instead of dice).

Otherwise I really enjoy card games like Jass https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jass and all its variants (Schieber, Coiffeur, Sackjass, Bieter...). If you are a couple people I recommend Molotow. Like the name implies it is a rather destructive variant of the Jass. Be assured, at the end of the game everyone hates everyone  Wink

Risk is a pretty good game.  I modified it so that no matter how many times one gets cards  you can't get more than 20 armies or else the game can go on forever. I made several other modifications to make the game much better and more fun. If you're interested I can elaborate.

Sorry, I'm a bit late with my answer. Yes, that's correct. It's hard to hide with such a local / traditional selection of games  Wink If you want to know even more exactly where I come from, I can tell you that I play with the Swiss-French deck. If you combine that with the knowledge about my native language, which you can also find in the forum, you are able to pinpoint my origin to only a couple of cantons.

Indeed Teg  Grin

I'm not far from New Glarus in WI and they are the only people I know in the States that keep playing Jass. Though I've run into a handful of midwestern shooting clubs that still do Swiss Shooting Matches. Maybe they play Jass when they're not shooting.

A US version of that kind of regional game is Sheepshead. Mainly a WI thing, much less in other states.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheepshead_(game)

In the Midwest in general Rummy is big. And good heavens are there variations of rummy. Several named for states in the midwest.

More current suggestions include Munchkin which is delightfully cut-throat and humorous.  It'd be worth browsing the German Board Game Awards. Board games are bigger over there and they pick good ones. Mensa also has some board game awards worth browsing.

If you're wanting to go real old school, I suggest Hnefatafl. Played by the Vikings and basically, at its simplest, uneven chess. Really quite tactical and a great game if you can get a good opponent. I made my own board and pieces but getting willing players is my problem.

I used to play Nine Mens Morris quite a bit. Its easy to learn but difficult to master. You can get an app to play people online but theres a lot of ringers that play and its rough going early on. Still fun though!

New Glarus? I had no idea that there is a second version of this town  Grin.  It's literally once over the mountain from where I grew up. Pereptualstudent, I guess we are neighbours  Grin

From the German Board Game Awards (Here's the wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiel_des_Jahres ) I can especially recommend Dixit, Carcassonne and Scotland Yard.
All are quite different. Scotland Yard is a team strategy game, Carcassone a single player strategy game and Dixit is a "talking" game.

I'm looking forward to try Munchkin once. I've heard many times of this game but never had the opportunity to try it.
