My sling... broke. Help?
May 5th, 2017 at 1:41pm

You might remember me posting about a sling I made. My best so  far. I just recently started to really like it and it became my favorite I've made, not only in looks but in performance too. But today, while I was slinging, I slung a rock and felt a pull and heard a sound that made me feel sick. I checked the sling, and the release cord had been cut or ripped off or something by the rock. This sling took me so long to make. It may seem silly, but since this took so much time and I've come to like it I'm quite upset... any ideas how to fix it?  Cry

not a clue Smiley

That's why i only make slings with replaceable cords.

Pretty sure you can splice a new bit of braid in there. Just don't ask me how, lol

Yep. Ive had a few die that way. Usually with weaker ,more brittle fibers and thinner lines. Hardware store jute seems especially prone if you are using thinner lines like the one on your sling. I second CA. Modular slings are the way to go.  Not only do they make sense they are completely traditional. You can find examples of primitive slings that had a stronger more permanant line for the retention cord and something more easily replaced for the release. You dont have to of course. You can make a permanant sling that will last a long time. But I like the option of replacing the release cord if need be.

Nice sling Smiley. I would undo the braid a few inches past the break, splice and braid on!

Thanks. Any tutorials on how to splice, and/or hot to make slings with easily replaceable cords?

Just write in google- "slinging org splicing" or whatever you want to search, there should be a massive subpage of all the results from the site.

To splice, what you want to do in basic terms is unravel the end of one thread (and another thread you want to connect it too) then twist together and then keep braiding with the new. Try to do it staggered so all the splices aren't in the same place too, so you might have to cut a few threads shorter than others.

Mine take about 45 minutes, most are variations on the Rockman sling. I've made them faster by using paracord and fewer strands, but really its the woven pouch that takes most of the time.

They last a few weeks sometimes much longer - its always the release cord ends that die.

Well this is the first time this has happened to me. Probably because I only started using longer slings more often quite recently. My other, shorter slings haven't had this happen. Must be because of length?
