How to make a long distance sling?
Apr 28th, 2017 at 7:49pm

Obviously it will have to be long. And have the least bit of air resistance possible. For this I've seen suggestions of fishing line and metal wire. But what about the pouch? I've seen suggested to do basically a split pouch and carve groves into your ammo, but I don't want to breath in lead dust, and I think the groves would interfere with aerodynamics. So any suggestions? Pictures? Amazon links?

I've also had this idea for a while. Would attaching a leather finger loop to a peice of fishing line and threading a lead fishing weight to the middle work? When you release would the sinker move down the release side and off? If this would work that will eliminate pouch resistance. But the problem I see, is how to hold the retention, obviously it needs to be thin enough for the weight to pass by unempeded, but I think something that thin would be hard to grip...

the things i would change to: leather pouch, a little shorter slings

Fishing line is both unnecessary and stretches too much.

I use 2mm masons line and lightweight pouch with holes in it.
Most people can't 3d print a 2gm rubber pouch. But thin leather and a hole punch would have much the same effect.

Lenght of sling is dependant on the slinger and distance throwing technique.

i don't know what material your masons line is but in my place most if not all are nylon and nylon is very stretchy.
fishing line is stretchy too
but the braided fishing lines ,the ones used for bowstrings(dacron, dyneema, spectra), have the least amount of stretch one can find

masons line is petty much just paracord without the middle bit: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/DIY-Tools/Faithfull-3100-Orange-Poly-Line/B0001IWL58/...

Bowstring is not fishing line Smiley

Been fishing for over 40 years, you don't fish with braided line.

For the record larry bray's record was set with a small solid leather pouch, fairly thin cords (can't remember exactly what they were made of - was nearly 10 years ago i saw it) and a stone he found.

The most important aspect was the throwing style.

i don't know why they call it that way ,
but it seems to have ideal characteristics for distance slings and bowstrings

Parmenion, what weight strength of that line would be best for a sling?

Think this might work better? It says abrasion resistant. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LCMESJI/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493728675&...

i think i used 40lbs and 80lbs with no problem during wind up. (it might work with 20lbs)
at release it may be cut by friction with stone.
i used stones 20-100g.

no way this is gonna work.
its monofilament not braid(most monofilaments, if not all, are stretchy)
also its nylon not dyneema,spectra(Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) etc...

*i have made some nylon(stretchy) slings ,they have a completely different feel. it's like there is a plateau of max speed not cause of your body but because of the stretchiness. and it feels smoother.

I've tried with fishing line before and I personally thought it took all of the fun out of slinging. Way too much tangling for my taste.

My best "distance" slings were just thin tarred bank line with a four strand braid, maybe 2mm thick. The retention loop can be as thick as you want, then just a small, tapered leather pouch. Have it as long as possible before it becomes awkward. You'll know when, but there is a point when a longer sling becomes counter-productive. A good lead gland or fishing weight will make a big difference as well, but ultimately, it comes down to the slinger.

When I first started slinging I assumed that the longer the sling the better the distance. This logic worked to a point but it has its limitations.  Though I got pretty good distance with some ridiculously long slings, as my technique slowly improved I found that for any style other than Pirouette the very best sling length for both distance and accuracy is one half of your height, folded length.  The designs I get my best distance with are either the TS3 (Three Strand Sheep Shank) or a modified thin tapered PJ.  A broken in jute sling works well for me.

One thing I've done to a few of my paracord slings is to iron them flat. This makes them less likely to twist and easier to keep track of the inside vs the outside. I imagine it would work for masons line as well.
I've never really made a sling specifically for glandes since I mostly throw stones but thin and dense cords are what I find give me the fastest throws

Seeing as I just bought a whole roll of Dacron B50 bow string material I'm thinking I should test it out for a sling. I'm thinking if I use a braiding board I can get a pretty tight weave and really thin. Hopefully it'll be strong enough.
