BTW, my favorite staff material is bamboo.  It's light, strong, and has just the right amount of flex for me. If no bamboo is available you can use just about anything. It's all good.

I recently made a staff sling from a black locust branch, and it turned out looking beautiful, but it does not function very well. The staff is about two meters long and is moderately thick with a short sling with a large on the end fastened through a hole drilled in the staff and a loop that goes around the end of the staff. I carved a very shallow groove for the loop to sit in. No matter what I try the sling always seems to release too late and sends the projectile toward the ground, I have had a few good throws with very heavy projectiles, but these seem to be flukes. Has anybody had much success with this type of release mechanism, and if so how did you achieve it? Thanks.

If it releases too late, make it easier for the loop to release. Sand the surface where loop goes over the end of the stick. You can check by holding the staff, and pulling on the pouch, and imitating the launch itself, to see ,at what angle it releases, then throw, see how it goes, and adjust if needed.

I've also tried a staff sling. I much prefer hand slings.

Toby: somewhere on this site there used to be a simple but effective illustration of how to adjust your staff sling to shoot at the proper trajectory. I'll try to find it for you.
Edit:  I found the URL to the illustration but c_a had to cut a lot of the old dead weight from slinging.org to save space so the picture I wanted to show you no longer exists.  Your problem can be easily fixed.  Just adjust the point where you have the sling attached to the staff. This will change your trajectory.

So, if it throws low, which way do you move the retention cord?

fishing casting video claims 265m and that's with the line tied to the projectile...
we really don't know the capabilities of a staff sling.

but a normal staff sling achieves probably 100-200m

Walter, I don't remember and Lyme Disease has left me very dyslexic. That's why I wanted the diagram. Anyway it's easy enough to move it both ways to figure out which way makes it shoot higher.
