Ammo could I use to produce a spark when it hits a metal plate?

I thought about flint, but that would probably tear a sling up with its sharp edges. Any other ideas? Possibly amazon links..  Grin

A smooth flint stone might work. I've seen sparks stone on stone. Sling at dusk for best results.

stone with some paper caps wrapped round it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cap_gun
Or use those little white paper twists of crystals.

I used to make jumping jacks using a length of fuse with little rolls of red caps wrapped tight round it and taped in place.
Talk about teaching you to duck Smiley

The caps won't go off when you throw - the crystals might. I can make them pop just by squeezing them between my fingers.

Your alternative is to use round flints or break the points off Smiley

Stones with a lot of quartz in them might do it. It would be random, unless you can get the quartz to hit consistently.

There are those little paper packets you can throw on the ground and explode. I'm not sure if they make much of a spark but would make an impressive crack.

I was also thinking magnesium. Think that might work better than flint? I can't find any flint balls for sale btw.

Soft steel against stone, producing good spark. Here's the spark size, compared to my size:

That video of the tracers is cool. I'd rather have one that sparks on impact now. But I do want to try something like that. Any idea how that was accomplished? And I'm still looking for suggestions on my original question.

Hmm I can't find magnesium orbs, but I can find magnesium plates. Think rocks would make sparks on that?

Magnesium might ignite, which with a significant lump is a major fire hazard.
The firelighting stick you get are not pure magnesium.

The sling bullet tracers were made by glueing led 'throwies' to the rocks.

Also by attaching cannon/firework fuse to rocks and lighting before throwing.

I was also thinking something like steel wool would work like a tracer?

How would I attach the fuse? I don't have any machines to drill holes in rock or metal, or melt metal. I was thinking putting a small layer of clay mixed with steel wool over a lead fishing weight?

Also, wouldn't I have to use a fire resistant pouch? I doubt leather can sling fuses unscathed...
