I know some golf courses have an apparatus that measures the speed of a golf ball flying through it. It's about 2X3 meters, so a large target to throw a projectile through easily. A golf course might let you use it but it could cost money, probably cheaper than a radar gun though.

david has a gadget with a fairly small gate that measure speed of a thing going through it.

I'd suggest he bring it to mallorca next year - but that would involve an unselfish act on his part - so unlikely to happen Wink

@Curious Aardvark do you mean a chrony?

i want to buy one and try but it needs some accuracy, inaccuracy would destroy it ...

Royal Armouries (UK) tried, but their slinging was so bad that they had to shoot close and slow-- hence v. slow speeds of shot. THey still published their results and it gets quoted a lot.
