Making designs on leather sling pouches.
Apr 8th, 2017 at 1:53pm

I have tried tooling, that didn't work well for me. I've seen where people have burned designs into leather, would that work well for a sling pouch? And any other ways y'all know of would be greatly appreciated.

Tomas is the guy to ask. I should know, I have some of his handiwork in my collection Cheesy

I currently use a small laser engraver. Works really well.
If you are artistically inclinef, which i'm not, then you can buy a cheap burning tool - like a soldering iron but with different tips.

With burning actually I have burned leather using a magnifying glass which works pretty well. Two things though:
1. The smell? Horrific.
2. The leather has a tendency to curl up. With a bit of stretching it usually goes straight again. It might be that it could help cup the leather to make the pouch but that would take some experimenting.

Pyrography kit is easy and works well on certain Leathers. Tooling only works on veg tan. If you are trying to carve designs in, it can be quite time consuming. But just a tooled border or something else just using the stamps is pretty quick and easy.
You can look up Bruce cheaney saddlemaker on YouTube. He's a good place to start
