The sling as a close combat weapon?

We all know the power of the sling at distance. But can it be used as a close range weapon? Like tying up an attacker or as a whip? Anyone have any ideas on this? Or can think up tequniques to use the sling as such?

There are quite a few "flexible weapons" systems and really a sling would work with basically all of them. I think especially a split pouch braided sling just because a wide pouch would be likely to get caught up whereas the split pouch stays the same thickness basically along the whole length.

You could hit someone with the rock loaded in, it would probably only be good for one shot though. You could use it as a whip if it's built right but even then you would have to gather the release cord after every whip.

I've hit myself with the release knot many times and it doesn't feel good. I've also, by accident grappled the sling to a metal chair. I can see how rope weapon teqniques could be used with some slings with more weight at the end, but for just a simple knot, some of those techniques wouldn't work

One thing the uk vikings renactors do. When theyve done their slinging, to keep the sling handy they wrap it round their hand/gauntlet.
It then acts as both extra protection, and a sort of knuckle duster as well.
Plus it's real easy to put it back in action once you've got some distance between you and the enemy.
A simple clip of tie will turn a proper poched sling into a flexible club - almost impossible with a split pouch unless you have a stupidly large rock.

No camera in here.
But easy enough.
Load rock into pouch.
pinch cords above pouch tight.
Tie cords together with piece of string or use a twist of wire or small clip.
Instant flexible club.
Yet another reason to use a shaped solid pouch rather than a split pouch - rocks would simply be forced through the hole in a split pouch.
Multi stranded or woven you could use, but not a straight split pouch.

What about the way they tie it on their wrists?

I tried the flexible club today. I liked it other than the fact it took a while to untie, I used a overhand knot, if there a better one that ties and unties faster?

c_a stole my thunder. A sling loaded in that manner would make an excellent close range weapon. It would add both reach and power to your strikes.
