what defines a balearic sling?
Mar 23rd, 2017 at 4:10pm

I am just curious on what defines  a balaeric sling?  I  was searching on the forum, and found it said, that even a 12 strand basic braid is considered a balaeric sling.  Is that true?   Would it be acceptable  in the competitions,  and what about  as a museum piece? As a variation of the style of sling?

The connection to the pouch is a bit different to just a regular split, you form a 'knee', there is also a lot of thickness added within the pouch split which gives a distinctive shape. This is followed by a thick retention cord tapering into a nice whippy end. In addition the trad balearic slings are made with fibre not twine.

Most of the standard split pouches I make take at least one or two of the above elements because I find them effective. I just say they are balearic style instead of balearic.

IMHO, the key traits of a balearic sling are:

A flat herringbone braid (most often 5 strand but some look "tighter" like a 7 strand)

The splits in the pouch equal or surpass in width the beginning of the retention cord.

The taper in the retention cord is confined to a smaller area than the more graceful taper in the release cord.

Those I think are the traditional features of a balearic sling as well the leather that sewn to protect the pouch.

From what I've seen, they are usually made of sisal, have a split pouch with a belly (thickens in middle of pouch then shortens again for weight).

Der Schwerpunkt liegt nicht in der Mitte.  Ich flechte meine mit zehn strängen. Das ist unüblich. Aber wurde sehr bestaunt.

according to the 'rules' - which are pretty much ignored by all and sundry, and nobody really knows why they have some of them anyway.
It must be a sling made from natural materials. As far as I know that's all the rules say.

Now me, personally I believe that natural materials include paracord - cos that's what's natural for me to use Smiley

There are so few slingers left that actually applying the 'rules' makes no sense.

Ask christian about the rules whistle lol

What actually defines a balearic sling is much simpler. It's a split pouch braided sling. Sometimes the pouch is lined with leather, sometimes not.  I've not yet seen one that wasn't made with natural fabres.
The pouch can also have three strands rather than 2.
It should have a tapered release cord with a fluffy 'cracker' on the end.

This is what I came up with at this point. Unfinished of course.  It's 12 strands of  sisal. A basic 3flat braid, grouped into 3 strands.  Thank you for the responses. I apologize for the size of tge pics. Any pointers to change it?

This is where I got the idea of a flat braid. It's a screenshot of a older thread.

What is the average thickness of the leather used as the cover? Or possibly the weight. I use 7/8 oz leather  for knife sheaths.  Which is a bit on the heavier side

not a clue - never even knew leather had weight categories Smiley

I just buy it in job lots when i can find someone selling it cheap.

The stuff on the sling I got from luis didn't stand up well to phoebe chewing it. so pretty soft I'd say Smiley

I've never taken the time to memorize oz. weight of leather. The leather for protecting the pouch should be about goat skin thickness. If you don't have a goat skin as reference, use your imagination.  Smiley
