Made in Spain
Feb 11th, 2017 at 10:20am

Hello

A good friend gave me his old camera, so I can show you a few pics of my slings.

I bought this two slings in a sunshade fabric and rope shop in Málaga about 2005. I remember I paid 6€ for each one  Cool

The one made of pita (Agave) has seven strands. Five strands are made of pita and two (one black and one yellow) made of twine.

The white one, I was told it was made of polypropylene. The retention cord is made with eight strings, with a sewn leather finger loop. It has about 12 stings in the stone pouch, 6 strings for each side. Later it reduces to 10 strings at the begining of the release cord. Later to 8. Later to 6, as in the stone pouch. Later to a 5 strands thread. Later for a bit less than 1'' it reduces to 3 plaits. And finally to 2 with two knots and the tassel.

I learned to make my slings watching carefully how the pita fiber one is pleated. But I usually make my slings with only 5 strands.

This sling is a bit less of 24'' long from finger loop to stone pouch in hurling position.

This white polypropylene string sling is about 20'' long from finger loop to the center of the stone pouch in hurling position.

I made this sling of palm leaf (Chamaerops humilis). It is not the best material, esparto or pita are by far much better, but I can get tons of palm leaves for free. Esparto doesn't grow here, and most Agave americana are removed because some considered that after 500 years growing here everywhere without any problem, alongside the chumbera Opuntia ficus-indica, they are now invasive and noxious species  Shocked  Huh  Angry

You can see here the sling laying beside a palm leaf, and a bunch of leaflets separated to make a plait.

I know that young leaves are the ones used to make baskets, hats and such stuff. But I cut old mature leaves because I think it hurt less the plant.

Later I leave the leaves to dry avoiding direct sunlight for two or three weeks.

As the palm leaf tassel rips very fast I mix some sisal fibers from a rope at the end. I don't make all the sling of sisal because the rope is a bit expensive.

I finish the sling with a simple knot of one of the strands over the others. I have replaced it because the old one was enterely ripped off and missing in action by the flying rolling
stones.

Those look great, I envy the people who can braid these. I have attempted but not very good at it.  Maybe in the future, I will have to try again
