What is this widget ?
Jan 18th, 2017 at 7:23am

So over the weekend I designed and made this thing.

I can tell you that it does work and I needed it to simplify a - mostly - seasonal job.  It is not a thing you can buy, which is one reason I designed my own.
I can also tell you that the first one was printed in normal 3d printer mode. With a hollowish interior. This had to be changed, so the one in the picture is made from 100%  solid pet-g. The initial porosity was a potential bad thing.

Can you guess what it is for  ? (nothing to do with slings)

Oh yeah, if you saw the post on facebook - keep it to yourself Wink

You say it's a mostly seasonal job, can you give us a hint and tell us the season?

I'm guessing his barbecue hobby. Pulling pork or deboning tool is my guess.

That was my first guess as well. But seems like the prods are at the wrong angle/shaped wrong for anything I can think of.

season is fairly short in the uk, december to end of february.

You could use it out of season for the same job, but with different species.

Not directly bbq related, but we are talking food Smiley

For pulling pork you'd need a couple of these: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:290566

Interestingly, the guys on the food forum who've done the job got it first time.
So it does look like other people think it should look like lol

I'm going with something seafood related because of the season. Can't think of anything else food related that has a winter season in the UK.

lol - I guess if you've never processed game birds and had to get their guts out of the chest cavity without ripping the whole breast off - you don't know you need one of these Smiley

So that's what it's for, helping to remove the internal organs from pheasants and ducks (dead ones, of course).

IN england the pheasant and water fowl season tends to be fairly short. So I get quite a lot of birds to do in a fairly short space of time.

My dad goes beating and shooting and so do various friends. I suspect I've become the dumping ground for spare birds as I don't say no Smiley

The worst part of skinning apheasant is removing the internal organs. It's quite a narrow opening, and to reach right to the back you usually have to get your whole hand in their - which tears the sides and leaves a very untidy corpse.
You can also use this to remove the lungs (hence the sccop aspect of the organ hooks) - I like to leave them in as both myself and the dogs like them cooked.

The two birds i did with this widget (pheasant and a duck) were the neatest looking ones I've ever done.

It's quite gratifying when you create a brand new tool and it actually works Smiley

It does however need a name. I've discovered that while i'm pretty good at inventing and printing new things, I'm bloody useless at naming them.
This tool currently exists under the name of: bird gut remover.
Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue Smiley

Any ideas for a decent name ?

Rather ingenious.

Gut puller?

Cavity cleaner?

Never cleaned a pheasant, and very few ducks.  Raccoons, foxes and bobcats make short work of pheasants when ever anyone tries to stock them.  And I am not on a flyway for ducks or geese.

Dove and quail, you just stick your finger in and pull.  Turkeys, you can stick your whole hand in.  I can see how the mid sized birds could be a problem.

Same with fish, just stick the finger and pull.
Different for cuddlefish, you have to be careful their ink does not come out dirtying the rest (while you can use it to cook a tasty rice).
