I seem to remember a fragment of the Dead Sea Scrolls that had to do w/ braided vs. simple slings. My biblical Hebrew is a bit rusty, but it was something along the following lines:
And lo, David fell to his knees and spoke unto the Lord, saying;
"Oh Lord, I am not worthy to serve you. I have not a proper woven sling, but only a simple shepherd's sling of goat [leather] scraps and bits of [hempen] string."
And the Lord looked own upon David with great favor and said unto him.
"Woven slings are an abomination unto me, for the People of Egypt, enslavers of the Children of Israel, used them.
And still David beseeched the Lord.
"I go forth against the Philistine Goliath. How can a shepherd's sling be any match for his armaments?"
And the Lord sayeth unto David
"Let thine faith be your armaments. With faith, all things are possible."
And so David went forth to the stream and bent there to pick five smooth stones from the waters. And these he placed in his shepherd's bag, thence to face the Philistine Goliath, guided by his faith in the Lord.
