Book for braiders: Owen, Andean sling braids

As a couple of you are fist- and marudai braiders:
There is a new book out.

Für alle Faust- und Marudaiflechter:
Es gibt ein neues Buch.

Andean Sling Braids: New Designs for Textile Artists
by Rodrick Owen and Terry Newhouse Flynn

It's an interesting read. It was an early christmas present for myself.

Well, that's awesome! I was just showing off the old book to someone last night!
Oh man, I'm quite jealous.
Was it more of the same or different?

With the old book you mean the book "Braids: 250 Patterns from Japan, Peru & Beyond"?
From memory, I recall that the old one did not cover braids with core and core-mantle substitution. Also, core wrapping is described in the new one and all the details for the front cover braid. And only fistbraiding patterns are treated in contrary to the old one (no e.g. kongo gumi from kumihimo).
Guess I'll have a look into the old one again. My memory about it is fading...

Okay, I had a look at the 250 patterns book again (the "old" book).
For 4, 8 and 16 strands the old book offers more patterns. New things I could find were core wrapping and color changes through thread exchange with the core. The braiding instructions are a bit more detailed in the new one.
What is completely new in the new book are about 30 or so 24 strand braids, some involving core-mantle substitutions to increase the number of available pattern sequences. For an example see the front cover of the book.

If you want to get into braids with core and more complex braids, I'd recommend buying the book. Otherwise the old book is more than capable of keeping you busy Wink

Thanks my man, I have yet to fully conquer the first book but have found renewed interest in it from this thread. Onwards and upwards!

Always upwards, thread by thread, unless you're doing Kakudai  Wink

Have a small appetizer Wink

Another sample. This time it's a continuously changing pattern.
