FINALLY I had the time to go slinging out in the field. It may have been -5 C with snow on the ground but that didn't stop me! What I learned is that the pan makes a great target and I'm horribly out of practice. I actually have no way of finding out how thick the pan as (I've been meaning to buy some calipers but haven't got round to it) but at a guess it's about the same thickness as yours Parmenion. So here are the results. Sorry it's a bit of a spam of pictures but I got the same deformation.

It's a rock. I was so happy to find it because it's perfectly smooth and roughly rugby ball shaped (football shaped for the Americans). It flies really well.

Oh... well... errm... I hit it straight away... Yeah...

A lot of shots. I'm really out of practice. Also I was using slings I haven't used before and it was around -5 C and it was slippy and icy and a bit windy and I was wearing a big winter coat and gloves and I think that's all of my excuses.

Practice makes slightly better eventually!

Don't feel bad. Many of us have been slinging for awhile and would have difficultly hitting that pan under those conditions.  At least I know I would.

Any info on your set up would be appreciated. I.e. sling length, type, throwing style, rock weight, distance to target etc.  Smiley

All good questions!
Paracord sling with a slingshot pouch 72cm folded, pretty much all the hits were with Byzantium, rock is 378g and I'm terrible at guessing distance but maybe... 7 meters? 6 meters? I'll remember to measure it next time I go out.
I'll post a picture of the sling I was using. It's a lot more beaten up and worn in since the photo was taken Cheesy

Oh yeah and the pan is stood up using a piece of thin wire, possibly from a wire coat hanger. I'm not exactly sure what it was originally used for. It was actually quite hard to see after I hit the pan as it would spring out then basically become invisible on the broken stalks of the field. A few times I really thought I had lost it forever. I've been meaning to put some tape on it to it doesn't go missing so easily.

can't you hang it somewhere? it will make better sounds Tongue

You should count your throws so you know if and how much you have advanced at your accuracy. don't feel bad, become better...

378g ?! this seems a lot for the rock in the photo, are you sure it's a rock?

I agree hanging it would make things much easier.
With the image scaled to match my mini bic, the rock appears the size of a tennis ball, about 157cm³ of volume, weight of 378g gives density of about 2.4g/cm³,  perfectly ordinary for a rock if my guesstimate is ok

Really makes me curious to see the damage a lead sinker or a proper glande would do to a pan like that. :X

Great photos - thanks for enduring the cold and the snow to bring us this.  Grin

Beast of a rock. I'm sure it made a very satisfying noise when it hit. I'm surprised it didn't shatter.

Sadly no where to hang it around here. I'm hoping to take it to the summer cottage in the, well, summer and there I'll be able to hang it.
It definitely is a rock but it is a beast of a rock. I have smaller ones but I loved the torpedo shape too much.
I would love to get some glandes or sinkers but I also really wouldn't want to lose them out on the field so I would like to have a backstop of some kind before I try them out.
I was kind of amazed it didn't shatter as well. Especially the first hit I landed which was a real clanger. It's got a few marks but the pan certainly came off worse.
