Actually looks a lot like modern knife fighting, with the off arm curled up in front to protect your guts.  I was under the impression that was late 18th, early 19th century style.  Which is where "modern" knife fighting comes from.  Then again, I don't know anyone who practices that style of fighting, so I could be wrong.

High guard is interesting, low or middle is usually taught in knife fighting, not really practical for knives, where you usually don't do blade on blade parries.  And your targets are the softer parts of the body, not the areas protected by ribs and skull.

Yes, the off arm protects the body, being used to swat away thrusts and, if the pursuer lingers on the thrust, to "command" his blade (i.e. seize it and wrest it away or throw the opponent to the ground). The style is Sir William Hope's "New Method" (1707). Hope recommends the hanging guard to parry cuts and to beat away thrusts, and thrusts to the soft parts (i.e stomach).

The "smallsword" is so named because it's much shorter than the rapier. It was typical civilian wear in the C18th (in Britain, France and Germany, but also America; officers wore it a lot in the War of Independence). Along with the backsword and the spadroon (military weapons), it is one of the mainstays of "modern" historical fencing in Britain. It's surprisingly fast (the short length of the blade allows for quick disengagement), rough (because of closing, seizing and throwing) and rather fun.

I prefer the hanging guard for infantry sabre that I practice with.  Though I do it a bit differently than these guys.  The main difference is the cut is the focus obviously with the saber so the blade is more open or held in position where you can do a cut from the wrist I think.

Here's Dr Thurston putting his salle through the paces with the English broadsword, mainly cut based but also centred on the hanging guard in seconde

This is similar to what I use. I have a 1822 infantry officers sword.
