Knuckle knife
Mar 17th, 2016 at 8:56pm

Just wanted to show off the latest piece from my forge. It is being built for a friend of mine who is a 6'7" 270 EOD tech. He always wanted a 1917 style trench knife but could never find one to fit his hand. I made this from a chunk of deuce and a half leaf spring picked up off a bomb range. The knuckle portion is mild steel from the same range but of unknown origin pinned and hammer welded to the blade. I am in the process of forging scales from a demilled 1919 vintage 1911 pistol frame. I made some impovements to the knuckle design and added a bottle opener. (The job isn't over until you are safe and sound and drinking a beer.) It can now be used in a reverse grip and has file work instead of points. Point of balance with the scales is about half an inch in front of the guard.

Very very cool. I recently got my start in "knife making", although they guy I'm learning from buys steel and cuts it to shape instead of forging..... He told me he has done it from scratch but doesn't have the forge etc.
Here's mine in progress, it's a knife to pare down the edges of leather.

Nice knives guys!

Ripper, is your knife's guard hammered on the tang or riveted?

Tomas, is that your first knife? It shows real craftmanship!
Should your friend need any help on how to build a forge, tell him to take a look at our Weapon's Index. How does he heat up the steel he buy for the temper?
