Bootstrapping Tech
Feb 10th, 2016 at 9:56am

Thought this might be a fun game that fits with our general interest in "primitive" tech/survival/rebuilding.

Here's the idea. Each post contributes a single piece of tech to the society we're building. But. You can only add it if you could make it from the pieces already posted or the natural environment.

So I'll start us off with some cordage. Slow going making it by hand but doable.

Importantly having cord allows us to make true circles and straight lines.

A net- again quite slow, but lets us catch fish/birds with basic traps and little effort.

Hand Ax

Lord knows I don't have the skill to make arrowheads or knives out of a block of flint or obsidian, but I think I could manage a hand ax.

Check out the Cobb mud that Tomas was talking about. Cool stuff.

The Cobb mud, another name is Adobe, which the native Americans of the southwest,  used. I am familiar with it.

I love the old adage "Every animal carries around enough brains to tan its own hide"

We'll need to tie together a frame and use the cord for stretching. And we'll have to scrape it with the hand ax. So yeah, I think we've got all the tech we'd need for that.

To which I add: Making a wooden shovel and mattock using Steven's Celt.

If we have cordage, why don't we make a bow drill and start a fire?

And drill holes in logs to make a much sturdier frame for our hut.

And if we have a celt and a fire, cut down a tree with the celt and hollow it out with fire to build a dugout so our net can be used in deeper water to catch larger fish.

And we can use the wood ashes to fertilize our garden, which we tilled up with PS's shovel and mattock.

And fire harden the points of sticks so we can hunt.  We get more protein and furs and hides from that.

And with the fire and some mud, we can make pottery.

Since we can cut wood, we can do some wickerwork.
And maybe we can weave some bags with the cords

And then, maybe a spindle and a loom, it is still winter and I don't want to stay naked :p

I think an elk shoulder blade shovel is better than wood. A lot lighter and they work well. Found this one this morning Smiley
