Aloha, and Hafa Adai from Guam!
Nov 26th, 2015 at 10:26pm

I'm very happy to have finally joined. I am a Hawaiian Artesian, and specialize in the Ma'a "sling". There are so many talented people here, and I can not wait to meet. And learn from everyone. Here is a picture of a rare Ma'a made from pandanus. This is a real traditional hawaiian sling, as far as I know, we were the only people to plait using pandanus as well.

Aloha! I didn't know the Hawaiian islands have a slinging history! Would you be able to tell us more about that?
And like the rest of us, I totally dig that sling:)

Aloha Tomas. Yes us Kanaka used the Ma'a "sling" during warfare. I am also a practitioner of weapon making from Hawai'i. In the island of Maui, there is a place called Hana, it is where warriors we're know for the expertise of using Ma'a. That was a place were the ma'a was known for during King Kamehameha's unification war  of the islands. Here is one example of my weapons.

I was born in Kapiolani Hospital but left the Island when I was 4 years old. That's pretty cool you make Hawaiian weapons. And I had no idea until recently that there were Hawaiian slingers! Thanks

I also spent my first 4-5 years on Oahu  Smiley. I wasn't born there though.

Nice sling by the way Kailuakoa, How did you make it? How long did it take?

Aloha SoLar. Awesome to meet people also that live on the island as well. My Ma'a in my picture is made from Lauhala "pandanus". It was a hard road to create as only verbal proof and 1 drawing referred to this type. The terminology plaiting was used as in weaving, and lauhala is the only strong enough material that would uphold force to make the plaited Ma'a. This is the rarest form of sling I am aware of. We also  used Hau which is the bark of wild hibiscus, and coconut fiber to create the standard Ma'a.  It is a delicate and time consuming  to create this particular sling. First is the harvesting and curing of the pandanus leaves, second is striping and sizing, and last is the birth of the actual sling. It is first started at the pouch then the release and tension cords.  I'd say it was  a good 2  week project.  Thanks you for your interest.

First: Welcome to the forum although I'm rather late  Wink
And congratulation to your nicely crafted sling.
Could you post the drawing of the sling on the photo? Could you also outline the "verbal proof"? I'm always interested in new designs. In this piece especially the transition into and from retention and release cord seems to be quite difficult to get right.

I've seen a very similar design in a depiction of a sling from Rarotonga, Cook Islands.
Here is the link: http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/BucArts-fig-BucArts301a.html

Me and Pikaru made two quick reconstructions/proof-of-principle pieces:

http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1172017416/3775

regarding slings from the pacific you may also find some interesting information in Pikarus blog: http://itanohu.blogspot.ch He is also using pandanus and, if I remember correcty, has also tried hibiscus and coconut, although with mixed results. Unfortunately he seems to be inactive at the moment.

Hafa Adai and Good Vibrations everyone,

I am a proud native of Guam of half Filipino descent as well.

I come from a very small but awesome island froma  culture that has been around since 3000 BC. Slinging had been such a massive part of our culture in the past and much of what i do as a slinger/stoner is to celebrate our people and honor our ancestors.

Stoked to be on board this forum, happy to connect with the like-minded,  and looking forward to joining this worldwide conversation.

Kailuakona is a good friend. His slings are not only made with great crfaftsmanship but even moreso in Spirit.

Im more than proud and humbled to sling with this spirit in world travel. have great day.
