Dragon Fly Knot Gear Hanger
When I was looking at a dragon fly knot it dawned on me that the wings would make dandy loops for hanging items.  There are even two small loops  extra loops at the bottom end as a bonus.

Myself, I've been playing with the idea of using prolong knot to make a split pouch but I have trouble making the knot consistent..... AKA lack of focus/patience.

I have many tutorials and hints for making net bags at
http://pineapple.myfunforum.org/forum99.php
Your idea of making a prolong mat and then I presume sew up the sides would make an attractive pouch.

Stormdrane's blog has many pouches/bags that should suit.  Here is one.   Explore his blog for others

I can only plead senior moment.  I posted this gear hanger on severall forums and forgot where I was.
I have made two types of knotted pouches and each works.  I am by no means a slinger.  I am happy when the projectile flies in the general direrction I am facing.

1.  Separate flat panel of netting.  Loops gathered at end with separate cord.

...

2.  Chain of netting until desired length is met.  Incerase meshes in each row and then decrease to form pouch. Then another chain.  I wove a separate cord through the outer edge of the pouch to give it a better shape.

...
