cheap cord source
Jun 20th, 2015 at 9:33pm

I'm considering buying a couple hundred yards of paracord or some other comparable cord for making some high end dog leashes and the like. Considering the amount of string and cord that us members go through I hoped you might tell me where you've shopped for cordage online.
Thanks!

I buy from Amazon because I've got a Prime membership and a rewards card. Before I had a credit card, I'd buy my paracord (and knock offs) from local hardware stores and outdoors/sports stores.

Ya I looked up some manufacturers. Seems promising.
Originally I had wanted to try leather lacing instead but the cost is unreal.

Military surplus sites are always good in my experience!

+1 on Military surplus

I've also found that some of them of lots of giant spools of multiple designs/colors and sell it by the foot. Haven't found a better place for price per foot AND multiple options.

It's nice to be able to say "I'll take 10 feet of blue, 5 of purple and 8 of green." While Amazon can give you a good deal per foot- it's only if you want a bunch of the same color.

Here are some of the places I've ordered from:

http://paracordgalaxy.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=158

http://www.theparacordstore.com/

http://www.paracord.net/

I haven't noticed a lot of difference in the quality from one supplier to the next; if it's not extra-inexpensive-imported cord, it's probably good stuff.

Some additional thoughts:

I prefer 550 paracord if I'm going to braid with the whole cord, but if I'm going to remove the core strands, than 650 or some other type works fine too, as long as the kernmantle is the normal size.

Although I don't usually feel the need to do it, some people recommend washing the paracord before making something with it because it can have issues with shrinkage. (This is only if you are leaving the core strands in)

I would not recommend mil-spec cord for braiding projects. The kernmantle tends to be less uniform looking and makes the project look less well made. Type III commercial is what I like to get.

I make all of my own dog leashes.  Synthetic cord is the only way to go.  Natural fiber leashes last only four to six months if that.  Synthetic fiber leashes last at least three or four years.  Recently I've been getting my Polypropylene and Nylon from The Tractor Supply.  Our local store has a pretty good selection.  Their prices aren't too bad.

Just made an order from paracord galaxy. Shipping was as much as the actual purchase lol
Now to wait and see how long shipping takes from the US to Canada.

As long as that connection point on the handle is solid I'd say it's perfect.. Maybe you could wrap the handle in leather?

Ya man the connection is sewn through the braiding with paracord.  The connection does need refinement though. I used a coxcombing pattern to wrap it but the next time will have a different join. I find it a bit lumpy where the cord ends:(
I divulge too much;)

Tomas, I believe that is the finest dog leash i've ever seen Cool. I forget that braided cords have more uses than just for slings  noidea
