twisted slings
Apr 15th, 2015 at 1:04pm

Hi there,
yesterday i got to sling again. I tried several slings that worked kind of ok. But then i took my old repaired one and it worked like "what the fu**?" I didnt know why it worked that good. The only thing is that the old one did not have a tiny twist when holding a ball in the sling. Also that sling cracked better and didnt tangle while throwing.

I cant imagine how a twist can have such a impact on the performance. Anyone else has a clue?

Are the slings otherwise identical? Can you narrow down the difference to just that one thing?

A couple of pictures might help, Morphy.

I get what you mean Toby. The twist does make the sling unreliable but you might be able to use steam to work the twists out of the cords. Sometimes I found my slings would twist if I braided too tight. If I braid a little less tightly I have an easier time getting the sling to run straight.
Good luck with it

i'm starting to think that every little part of the sling has a huge affect on the sling, like i just changed my cracker at the end of the sling to another type of nylon that had a little bit less fuzz at the end and i couldn't hit anything, then i changed back to my old cracker i was accurate again. and the twist in the sling, causes the sling to grab unreliably, so no twist=minimal grab.  Smiley

I agree. Probably the best idea to get a reliable answer.

if you're using natural fibers you might try coating the whole sling in a nice coat of jojoba oil and working each of the braids with your fingers to break it into the weave. Helps with mine. Also brand new slings sometimes have a twist. After some breaking in they go straight. Twist is very bad for accuracy IMO.

First picture is my good old sling.
The next one is a jute-split with a leather put in between. It has a thinner string but feels like more resistance.
Third picture is the worst one but it wasnt so bad that day somehow.
I managed to get the twist out by countertwisting and  rubbing it over the edge of a table. Still the string is twisted in itself.

Ouch, ya that isn't good.

Some ideas.... possibly you braided twist into it. Or its possible that you used it a lot one day and loaded twist into the fibers and then set it aside and it's stuck that way just like wrinkles in a shirt. Both could be wrong, I don't know. One thing I can tell you is that twist in the 3rd picture is not good for slinging at all. I haven't had to deal with stuff like that since switching to paracord so I'm not the most helpful here.

yeah, yikes that third pic is pretty bad, the only way i have found to fix it is to twist the sling release cord until its straight and just use it like that for a while and hope it fixes it.

you may have gotten it wet and then it dried with a weird memory. If that is an agave fiber sling, what I do is dunk my finished sling into a 5 gallon bucket of water for 20 seconds then I take it out and shake it off and hang it with a 10 pound weight until it is completely dry. Sometimes a blow dryer can assist you in this process. Make sure that when the sling is hung it is lined up straight otherwise you will be defeating the purpose once it is dried.

If this does not work my guess is there is something wacky with the way you twisted your braids. That's my only guess. Good luck

Attached are the pics

I dunno why I didn't mention this before, but for flat and square braids I have hammered them into shape over a hard surface. It is dead simple and essentially breaks it in and accentuates the shape a the same time.
I pretty much trump it up to variances in the braids tension but if you did wet it and hammer it and also stretch it like huntmans idea it would def help

Oh wait, i think the last time or before that i used that bad sling was when it had snow. I didnt watch for the straightness of the string back then.

My braids are sometimes twisting too!

it probably got really wet from the melted snow then you dried it all crumbled up in a bag or something. It's happened to me.

I'd say just make a new sling and keep it dry. It's good practice and then you'll have something nicer to use.
