Ammo Weight When Slinging For Accuracy
Nov 25th, 2014 at 6:53pm

What's your ideal projectile weight when slinging for accuracy? I've seen numbers ranging from 20 grams to 300 grams, so it should be interesting to get an idea of what's average. Here are the options in grams to make it easier for those who aren't used to ounces:

0-1oz=0-28g
1-2oz=28-57g
2-3oz=57-85g
3-4oz=85-113g
4-5oz=113-142g
5-6oz=142-170g
6-7oz=170-198g
7-8oz=198-227g
8-9oz=227-255g
9oz+ =255g+

A golf ball weighs 46g (1.6 ounces)
A tennis ball weighs 58g (2.1 ounces)

If your ideal weight is between options (e.g 1oz,2oz,3oz,4oz, etc.) choose the lower of the two options. For example, if you use 4oz projectiles, your answer would be option 4.

I've never weighed my projectiles so I'm guessing with " a bit heavier than a tennis ball....

I just bought a kitchen weighting scale and I weighted my clay projectiles, they weight from 60g to 110g. I'd say 100g is perfect for me.

I like anywhere from 2-4 oz for general use, but for plinking I tend to favor ammo in the 2-3oz. range. It's easier to get it to fly fast and straight as well as going for longer sessions without tearing up my elbow :p

Thanks for all the info guys. So far it looks like we all actually use similarly weighted ammo, I was expecting responces to be more spread out.

Right around 4oz for me. However, after a few throws, I can usually adapt to other weights (like tennis balls or larger rocks). Dense, egg sized rocks are ideal though.

I was pretty good at slinging like 10 years ago.

the clay balls I used for the hodd hill marathon are all around the 2-3 ounce mark.

And they were good for accurate slinging from 10 yards on up to 100.

I could probably go a little heavier without any issues.

But 60-70gms is a real nice weight.

lol - done that as well.
...
5 1/2 lb rock. Horrible shape for slinging.

Here's a more sensibly sized rock.
...

But a clay ball around 60-70 gms just feels 'right'.
Great size, nice density, heavy enough to kill just about anything.

And good for distance.

I'm a lazy bugger at heart, so if I'm going to carry ammo around I like something that's got good all round capabilities Smiley

I would like to sling a 2 pound rock at a wooden door from 30m or so. Just for the heck of it.

With clay balls do you mean spherical balls? I've made smooth spherical clay ammo, they do fly good, but they tend to fall out of my simple leather and balearic split pouches. That is why I nowadays only make clay glandes. With Balearic style the glandes get a really nice spin, fly straight and they never fall out before release.
