I'm thinking like a foam core for boaters so your keys could float. I've done sinnets ending in a monkey's fist (with a core) but this knot looks more decorative for a key fob.

I have never tred this knot with a core. You will have to bring the four cords that go through the knot around the core before coming out the bottom of the knot. Try it and post a picture. It would make a good looking floating key fob.
