http://news.yahoo.com/dr-congos-insect-cuisine-nutritious-delicious-083315834.ht...

Could you ever see yourself making insects a serious portion of your protein intake? As in, replacing a substantial portion of your meat with insects, instead of just the rare bite? For those of you that are vegetarian, would eating bugs work for you?

A few weeks ago I ate a meal worm for the first time. It wasn't great, but it was ok. I think I could get used to it if I had the right motivation to get me started.

not a problem.

I've eaten insects - kinda like seafood.

We get dried mealworms for the birds. A bit crunchy but otherwise perfectly edible.

I really don't see what the problem is. It'll essentially end up being processed like quorn (which is processed fungal mycelium grown in massive tanks).

Basically they're landbound shrimp Smiley

I mentioned before reading Marvin Harris' book, "Good To Eat", which is about dietary habits and foibles all over the world.

Insects are a staple in many areas, as you might expect mostly tropical climates where they are plentiful and easy to obtain.
(I've seen footage of little native kids joyfully munching on big spiders...Yechh....)
Anyway, they are good for you by all accounts but most Westerners look on them with considerable revulsion.
But if you think about it, they are just arthropods like other critters that we enjoy thoroughly like shrimp and lobsters....

Yep, it's just a matter of what you're used to.  I imagine eating a crab would seem quite weird if you never saw one before.  Due to my upbringing, I'd be slow to come around to eating bugs but if I had to I would get used to it.  In the army they taught us to eat bugs in an emergency situation.  Yummy!

For some reason I've always wanted to try cooked grasshoppers. I'm not sure why.

I think if I could just have the motivation to do it for awhile, and get used to it, it would actually be a really cool food source.

For me, it's texture. Small things like ants don't bother me, but the larger grubs... nope nope nope.

It is a matter of what you're used to.  I heard an anecdote once that when Columbus reached America, he found that the locals set out traps for lobsters.  Except they didn't eat them, they used them as bait to catch fish.

Sorry, but it's a pet peeve of mine:  'Yea' isn't the word you want.  It's 'yeah'.  'Yea' is an anachronistic word you see in the King James bible. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of Spellcheck, I shall fear no misspellings for thou art with me.  Thy dictionary and thy thesaurus, they comfort me.

In the revolutionary war era lobster was fed to American prisoners of war (and our own inmate) as a form of punishment. The practice actually caused a prison riot in Massachusetts.

Strangely enough I've always felt the same way.  Grasshoppers and locusts but not crickets.  They must have been a regular food source for our ancestors. Maybe it's like a race memory, Morphy.  I felt the same way about acorns.  Even though until recently I never tried to process them, they've always looked like food to me.  I know Native Americans ate them (maybe still do) and they're still used as food in some parts of the world.  And both grasshoppers and acorns are very good for you.

I've harvested a lot of acorns. Emory oaks produce acorns that don't need any processing; good raw or roasted. The bug thing just does'nt work for me. Even here in the sw, I think I can continue to get by without ever dining on ants or grasshoppers. Guess I have a food predudice Smiley

You may very well be right. I've always felt the same way about acorns. For the amount of food produced by one good size oak tree, and the fact that you don't have to put any work into it at all for them to produce it, it seems like an ideal food source.

Believe it or not I had a guy at work last night randomly bring up the fact that he eats bugs. We had a conversation about grasshoppers as well. I'm telling you guys, this is the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a huge new pop culture phenomena!

Really all marketing and fads is based on the ability to convince people that something is cool or needed. It's all about perception of reality. If you could start a restaurant and get a marketing campaign that made bugs the new cool thing, you would be set!  Grin

Think Red Lobsters crab fest, only with grasshoppers.  Cheesy
